Class-Divided Cities: San Francisco Edition
- thrownblown 10y agopoor color coding choice for color deficient readers.
- Buge 10y agoYes, I cannot tell the difference between blue and purple. 8% of men are colorblind, it isn't some rare disease.
- andreareina 10y agoSo as far as I can tell there's no blue on the first map (SF proper). The only blue I could find was a small patch centered on the Oakland Airport.
- surfmike 10y agoand they also paint unpopulated areas, like the santa cruz mountains, with red
- duskwuff 10y agoThe lead map also appears to depict the Presidio and the Golden Gate Bridge as occupied. (By the creative and working classes, respectively.) Weirdly, they managed to carve out gaps for several other parks, so it's not like they didn't support unpopulated areas...
- Noseshine 10y agoThe Presidio is populated. I shared a house with three room mates there once - great area (morning run to the Golden Gate bridge), shitty houses. It isn't densely populated, but it does have quite a few houses.

- personjerry 10y agoSo, acknowledging the difficulty of finding affordable housing, does anyone have any practical suggestions for a young techie planning to move to the Bay Area soon?
- gt2 10y agoLook for roommates with similar interests and habits and you should be fine.
- misnamed 10y agoDitch your car, accept that roommates are a way of life, and keep track of your non-essential expenses.
- CardenB 10y agoHow do you deal with outdoor activities?
- acchow 10y agorent a car with a bunch of friends when you need to drive out to the mountains
- Chronic9q 10y agoLadies and gentlemen, the above comments are excellent examples of millennials who have no business moving to a place they can barely afford. If you need to significantly lower your quality of life just to work in a cool place, you seriously need to rethink your life plans.
- YuriNiyazov 10y agoDoes anyone know of any serious movements to completely repeal rent control in Berkeley and San Francisco?
- h4nkoslo 10y agoNope. The wonderful thing about rent-creation schemes (in the economic sense, not just "rented housing" although it's obviously a canonical example) is that they create built-in constituencies. Make the built-in constituency powerful enough to crowd out the competition and it is extremely difficult to dislodge. Examples: rent control, copyright law, professional certifications (eg law or medical license), government contracting standards, direct access to money supply...
- wtvanhest 10y agoI don't have rent control, but in my opinion it is fine to stay in the older buildings as long as we keep constructing new units. Once the percentage of units with rent control is high enough, it won't be as much of a factor.
- Kalium 10y agoWhen the number of old units full of rent-control tenants grows high enough, they can become a constituency in their own right. At this point, like any good constituency, they seek to preserve their position against dilution. Construction of new, un-controlled units would threaten such a dilution. Some believe this has already happened in SF and has been a major driver of the current housing crisis.
- wtvanhest 10y agoThe people in rent controlled units do not have enough power to stop construction. They delay projects, they even block and reduce some projects, but as time moves on, sf will build units and their power will shrink rapidly.
- js8 10y agoI don't understand their class definition. Does the article imply that the class divide based on income/wealth is dead and now there is a divide based on profession instead?
- flukus 10y agoI'm not even sure what differentiates any of the classes. How is creative not a subset of working and/or service classes? Wouldn't a lot of "creatives" be making less than a lot of working class?
- geebee 10y agoYeah, the use of "creative" here is odd. A corporate lawyer is a creative worker, whereas an artist or writer working in a coffee shop is probably a service worker. Not hard to understand what they mean, but creative as a term is diluted here.

- panic 10y agoThere's a distinction to be made between economic class and social class: http://siderea.livejournal.com/1260265.html?format=light http://siderea.livejournal.com/1260265.html?format=light
- Ericson2314 10y agoThere totally is, but not sure how one can get at the latter very well from census data.
- losteverything 10y agoThe census continually surveys households year after year. The big one of course is the decannual census. Much fewer households receive the census but they are much more rich in the questions asked.
- matthewmcg 10y agoWhat's going on with Alcatraz Island? It's shaded "primarily service class"! Are there NPS personnel living there full time?
- zach 10y agoAlcatraz is lumped into the same census tract as the Presidio.
- rglovejoy 10y agoAnd why is Santa Clara County left out?
- RandomName2020 10y agoNot only that: Alameda county is not a part of SF metro. Especially Fremont, which is part of Fremont-Milpitas-Union City tri-city metro.
