Heads up for anyone using Karabiner to remap their keyboard-- it's not updated for Sierra yet.
I figure that's a more popular app among HN crowd than most places, and losing it is really painful.
- easychris 10y agoOh, thanks. That saved me from a lot of trouble. :) This is the Github issue if anyone needs to subscribe to this issue: https://github.com/tekezo/Karabiner/issues/660 https://github.com/tekezo/Karabiner/issues/660 EDIT: I read the comments at above issue; the version for MacOS Sierra is being developed as "Karabiner-Elements" [1] And you can make a donation to the author here[2]. - ctrlrsf 10y agoThis README[1] has instructions for installing Karabiner-Elements and has a few examples for mapping some common keys such as caps-lock to escape: [1] https://github.com/tekezo/Karabiner-Elements/blob/master/usage/README.md https://github.com/tekezo/Karabiner-Elements/blob/master/usa...
- hyh1048576 10y agoDoes that mean Karabiner and Seil are now combined? I mapped my Caps Lock to escape, but I just realized that it's not by Karabiner, and I need Seil from the same author to do it.
- ralfd 10y agoWhat can Karabiner do better than Ukelele? http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=...
- prh8 10y agoIt can do almost anything with the keyboard. I'd suggest just checking it out. A lot of people make changes to caps lock, shift key, left/right option/command, etc. I only do two things, setting fn to send hyper and swapping semicolon/colon. It's more about individual rules than a new keyboard layout (which is what Ukulele appeared to be in my 5 minutes with it). Maybe other people can chime in on their uses, since I'm not the best to fully answer your question.
- izacus 10y agoIt also has a lot of prebaked configurations in it. For example there's one that changes Slovenian Apple layout (which is pretty nonsensical with @ on 3rd level) to the standard layout used by PCs. That's hugely useful for people who use Mac Minis / iMacs with non-Apple keyboards (since Apple refuses to add the standard layout to OS X). With Karabiner that's an issue of a single tick.
- charlesism 10y agoKarabiner has support for most, if not all, keys on the keyboard. On a Mac, the Function keys aren't properly supported by the other key remapping apps. With Karabiner, I can use a PC keyboard to change screen brightness, volume, etc. I can also remap Fn+JKLI to the arrow keys, and much more.
- ivm 10y agoSeil does Caps Lock rebinding, I use it for keyboard layout switch.
- jamesgeck0 10y agoSticky keys are the big one for me. I have Ctrl mapped to act as Ctrl when pressed at the same time as another key, or to act as Esc when pressed alone. It's not currently supported by Karabiner-Elements; I haven't found a way to do this on macOS Sierra yet.

- scolson 10y agoHijacking this to point out about as comprehensive a list of software compatibility with Sierra as I have found: https://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx&os=sierra https://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx&os=sierra I have used it on past releases (El Cap, Yosemite, etc) and it has always been a great source for tracking the software I care about as a developer.
- MR-ROBOT 10y agoThanks very much for the link. I'm in shock at how many applications that are incompatible. This is far from a upgrade, considering it's breaking nearly every essential application I use in my workflow. You would assume that backwards compatibility is Issue #1 in regards to operating system updates.
- srgseg 10y agoAny recommendations for a simple keyboard remapper that is compatible with Sierra? All I need is to swap the @ with "
- OJFord 10y agoIsn't one of Apple's UK mappings sufficient?

- srgseg 10y agoThanks for the tip - unfortunately that mapping changes too many other things on the keyboard at the same time.
- shabble 10y agoNot sure if it still works, but the ~/Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict approach maybe? I use it for putting # on the § key, and it's as simple as: { "\U00a7" = ( "insertText:", "#" ); } in that file. YMMV on >capitan though.
- pkamb 10y agoSounds like it may take a while: > macOS 10.12 changes of the generic keyboard and mouse drivers made a great impact on Karabiner and Seil. > We should make a large changes in Karabiner and Seil architecture. > There is not a workaround for this issue. > Please wait an update of Karabiner and Seil for macOS 10.12. > (It may take a long time.)
- OJFord 10y agoFlycut clipboard history also broken. (Menubar icon flashes open then closes on click, rendering it unusable.)
- sotojuan 10y agoPhew, was going to lose my Caps Lock -> Ctrl + Escape binding. I downloaded the update, but will wait for Karabiner to support it.
- HNSucksAss 10y agoBecause of Apple's idiotic failure to put real Delete keys on their laptops, the lack of Karabiner makes using them insufferable. WTF is wrong with Apple?
