If you want to see a site that starts off with noble ambitions but descends into a swamp of thinly-veiled trolling masked in good intentions...I present Nextdoor.com. Brigading, a tactic employed to great effect on Twitter, is just as present in these so-called community discussions.
Righteous, uptight, indignant, spiteful, entitled...I never knew how much I despised my neighbors until I joined my local Nextdoor.
- cortesoft 10y agoI am pretty neighbors have always been like that, with gossip and shit talking. It just was never in a place where you could see it all at once, and where as before people would only say those things to people in their confidence, now they can say it to everyone anonymously on a forum.
- organsnyder 10y agoThat probably depends on your neighbors (in particular, the ones that are active on Nextdoor). My neighborhood's space is fairly pleasant. While there are occasional busybodies ("I just noticed some kids walking down the street—should I call the police?"), everyone is respectful and cordial.
- beat 10y agoIt sucks to find out too much about people sometimes. I got friended on FB by a guy I did some volunteering with this summer (and will do so again next summer). Turns out he's a racist, transphobic bigot. So my question is, do I just start laying into him until he learns something (and damage relationship with someone I have to work with), or do I just unfollow and hold my nose later on?
