In retrospect I find this 3-days-old publication quite... amusing)) "... I [SC CEO and Musk cousin L. Rive] asked, 'Elon, hey can I have a family discount' and his answer is, 'Yeah absolutely. Go to TeslaMotor.com, buy the car online, and the price you see there is the family discount,'" Rive told Tech Insider. "Everyone gets a family discount."
So there you have it: Musk does not believe in preferential treatment for family members.
"I give Elon credit beyond the fact of being the best entrepreneur in the world — he treats everyone the same. Everyone. There’s no nepotism at all," Rive said.

- mikeash 10y agoSupposedly he paid full price for his own cars too. Although I'm sure he can afford it without too many sacrifices.
- jjeaff 10y agoUnless you own 100% of a company, it isn't really ethical to give yourself a discount or freebies. And wouldn't be legal unless handled correctly with the tax man.
- mikeash 10y agoEmployee discounts are extremely common.
- outside1234 10y agoElon is not an employee.
- adventured 10y agoElon is an employee of both Tesla and SpaceX. The discounts conversation was referring to Tesla vehicles.

- fma 10y agoReally. I get an employee discount at my company. I must own 100% of the company.
- Hondor 10y agoYou probably didn't arbitrarily give that to yourself. If the company decides to give employees discounts for some reason, like staff retention, that's quite different from just picking up whatever you like from the warehouse and walking home with it.
- mikeash 10y agoNobody is saying he would arbitrarily give something to himself. My statement could be reworded as "even the CEO doesn't get an employee discount."
- Dangeranger 10y agoIt has not been shown that he treats everyone the same. In fact on at least one well publicized occasion he has singled a person out. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/03/elon-musk-blogger-tesla-motors-model-x https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/03/elon-musk...
- wfunction 10y agoHuh? There's nothing to say he wouldn't have done the same if it was his own cousin doing that...
