They increased the lock size from 100010042 feet to 140018060 feet.
Until now, the maximum amount of containers on a ship that could fit was 5000. New locks - 14,000 containers.
One thing I hope though is this is future-proof by building for larger than the largest current ships. Is this the case?
- mrob 10y agoIt's not future-proof. There are already ships too big for the new locks. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panamax#New_Panamax https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panamax#New_Panamax
- garrettgrimsley 10y agoRight, which is what the Nicaraguan canal is supposed to be able to handle, if it is ever constructed.
- mapt 10y agoIf it is, expect the Panama Canal to start work on the fourth set of locks, and perhaps finish before the Nicaragua Canal.
- brianbreslin 10y agoThere apparently is no visible sign of progress on the Nicaraguan canal project from people in the country (government even). I doubt it will ever get built, unless the Chinese market goes bananas and they feel its worth financing this.
- walrus01 10y agoConsidering that the billionaire investor behind it has zero track record of implementing massive construction projects (on the scale of Samsung working as a prime contractor for the Burj Khalifa, for example), I'm very suspicious that it's anything other than vaporware...
- msandford 10y agoIt helps to use "x" instead of shift-8 (star) as the star is used for italics which is why your comment is a little hard to understand at first.
- Retric 10y agoOr spaces "lock size from 1000 * 100 * 42 feet to 1400 * 180 * 60 feet."

- tomglynch 10y agoThanks for this, will edit. Edit: Oops, I missed the editing deadline.
- JoshTriplett 10y agoI do wonder what it would take to get new comments to support `code` escapes or multi-line code escapes, similar to Markdown.
- nradov 10y agoTo be pedantic, the proper character to use is "×", not "x".
