The Google Chrome Extension White Supremacists Use to Track Jews

- LennyHenrysNuts 10y agoWHITE SUPREEEEEMISTS! WHITE SUPREEEMISTS! WHITE SUPREEEMISTS! I'm getting so bored of this mantra.
- aoeuasdf1 10y agoSomething is seriously wrong with you if you don't think the explicit targeting of Jews online is problematic.
- LennyHenrysNuts 10y agoIt's not targeting Jews. It's letting you know that a possible Zionist is communicating with you... or do you think that the crack team of KKK coders developed this for middle-of-the-night kidnappings?
- Buetol 10y agoFor the curious, here's the sources of the extension: https://robwu.nl/crxviewer/crxviewer.html?crx=https://crx.dam.io/files/hldnghbakgkgeocjllocmpobpppkfepo/14.88.20.zip https://robwu.nl/crxviewer/crxviewer.html?crx=https://crx.da... Fun thing: there's a list of jewish sounding names in background.js Also a link to a list with "the right stuff" containing only "trump": https://gitlab.com/therightstuff/public/raw/master/theList.json https://gitlab.com/therightstuff/public/raw/master/theList.j... Also, some metadata here: https://crx.dam.io/ext/hldnghbakgkgeocjllocmpobpppkfepo.html https://crx.dam.io/ext/hldnghbakgkgeocjllocmpobpppkfepo.html
- angersock 10y agoNote that the tool didn't actually hurt anyone. One can easily imagine a similar tool used for, say, annotating affiliations of authors or people in the news with companies. EDIT: Aaaand down votes. Time was HN could think critically about the news and tech. Good work folks. EDIT2: So, note that this was removed for the following reason: Google's Terms and Conditions for apps explicitly prohibit "promotions of hate or incitement of violence." If merely highlighting names according to some criteria counts as a promotion of hate or incitement of violence, it would seem our standards have slipped. Also note that this was something being used purely to "enhance" the browsing experience of users. It wasn't being forced on anybody, there wasn't a button "right-lick to lynch", or anything like that. Again, this is the moral equivalent of any of those plugins one uses in Gmail to view a correspondent's business information. Don't lose sight of that. It's not obvious that this was either a) a bad thing or b) hurting anybody.
- aoeuasdf1 10y agoReally? How would you feel if an islamic terrorist group had funded it, and it circled Anglo-saxon names? Is that as defensible as getting business information about your contacts?
- angersock 10y agoDoesn't bother me--it's helping some set of people filter through information and remix it as they see fit. Such things were the founding principles of the Internet, and I don't think the vague bogeyman of "but but but terrorism/racism/whateverism" is worth throwing away something that helps people--even people whom I despise.
- timthelion 10y agoIBM famously made a lot of money creating a database of Jews: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_during_World_War_II#Germany https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_during_World_War_II#German... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_and_the_Holocaust https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_and_the_Holocaust This is similar.
- angry-hacker 10y agoAnd same can be said about several big corporations or businessmen. The IBM fact is new to me, though!
- sudojudo 10y agoIt's odd that their browser of choice is from a company that was founded by a couple of Jewish dudes. Also, aren't these the folks who are obsessed with the New World Order, and wouldn't Google be a key player in that scheme?
