The sad state of things is that, although the technology evolved to our current 21st century level, the legislation didn't follow suit.
Here is the 11 titles available for international markets (like Brazil, for instance):
Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland
Deck the Halls
Leprechaun
Leprechaun 2
Leprechaun 3
Leprechaun 4 movie collection
Leprechaun 4: Lost in Space
Natural Born Pranksters
Return of the Living Dead 3
Russkies
Two Family House
Excellent selection if you are the #1 fan of the Leprechaun series, not so much otherwise.
- guhcampos 10y agoNot to mention that these are 48 hour rentals.
- grecy 10y agoI see what you mean, but let's not criticize them for at least trying. These companies are behemoths that take a long time to move and adapt. At least they're trying, and hopefully the selection will improve over time. Nobody is perfect on their first try.
- luso_brazilian 10y agoMy opinion, based on what is apparent by the quality of the offer, is that this not a serious attempt of providing service to the international audience. It appears that these few titles were made available to the international markets only as a way to give strength to the PR claim. The press release title is "Lionsgate launches films on Steam's global digital distribution platform" [1] and, although the blockbusters are prominently mentioned by name (like Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent & Saw Franchises), nowhere in its text it is mentioned that, apart from those 11 token titles, these are available only to U.S. customers. The press release forwards any inquire about availability or pricing to another site [2] but that doesn't mention this limitation either, simply displaying the available titles and prices. As said, in my opinion they are not trying, the apparent reason they made these 11 titles available was to be able to announce "Available to Steam Customers" instead of "Available to U.S. Steam Customers" [1] http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lionsgate-launches-films-on-steams-global-digital-distribution-platform-300256508.html http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lionsgate-launches-f... - lallysingh 10y agoThis is a toe in the water, to test the temperature. I'm sure that it must be crazy annoying to read those titles, and then see Leprechaun 4 (4! in space! it was awful) as one of the only options. But movie licensing is about as organized and simple as anything else in hollywood.
- michaelbuddy 10y agooh we can definitely criticize them. What are the chances the company is making any money off these titles as it is? They are putting the chaff up on Steam rather than really committing to the platform with genuine titles.
- teej 10y agoHow does that have anything to do with legislation and not licensing contracts that Lionsgate has previously agreed to?
- luso_brazilian 10y agoCopyright legislation is country by country basis and needs to be "navigated" as such given the differences in legislation. Although there are global companies that have the resources to do it worldwide it still makes more sense to license IP to national distributors [1] and give them exclusivity in their local markets. This closes the doors to global digital players like Steam or Spotify, for instance. - toyg 10y agoThat might have been the argument 15 or even 10 years ago; but in the age of Netflix, Amazon and Spotify, the real reason is only one: price segmentation. Differentiating by country is a straightforward way to price-segment to account for (immense) income disparities across the world in order to maximize revenue and publicity. Everything else is an excuse to justify this state of things without calling it with its real name.
- pbhjpbhj 10y ago>a straightforward way to price-segment to account for (immense) income disparities across the world // There's price expectation and competition to take account of too.
- bobbyi_settv 10y agoLeprechaun In the Hood is generally considered to be the high point of the series and isn't included.
- rlonstein 10y agoI thought you were joking. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/leprechaun-in-the-hood http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/leprechaun-in-the-hood I wish you were joking.
- bobbyi_settv 10y agoIt was successful enough to get its own sequel, Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood. I'm still not joking: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/leprechaun_back_2_tha_hood/ http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/leprechaun_back_2_tha_hood/
- Loughla 10y agoI mean, if nothing else, you have to respect the dedication to creating complete and utter shit.
- themartorana 10y agoThis is my favorite thread of all time. I did, I assure you, LOL.
- B1FF_PSUVM 10y agoHad a Manka Bros. moment there reading that list. (http://www.mankabros.com http://www.mankabros.com , highly recommended. Where else on the internet are you going to read the phrase 'Discussing Schopenhauer with Ryan Seacrest. I will never forget him stumbling over and screaming in my face: “After your death you will be what you were before your birth… bitch!”' allegedly written by a recently pantsless drunk media CEO?)
