Get an unbiased opinion on if you should get out of bed
- tony_null 11y agoWhat's the weather got to do with getting out of bed? I sleep in a house with walls and a roof to protect me from that stuff.
- torgoguys 11y agoI had the same thought. I don't get it. Absent extreme situations, such as a hurricane approaching (in which case one should get up and leave the region), the weather has zero bearing on whether I should get up or even whether I feel like getting up. (And yes, I am exposed to the weather daily--I walk to work each day, rain, shine, snow, warm, or 20 below.)
- dionidium 11y agoAll the folks in this thread responding like this are confusing. Do you never jog, ride a bike, go for hikes? In general, do you ever spend your Saturday mornings outside? The weather plays a huge role when I'm deciding whether to sleep in or not.
- torgoguys 11y agoSure I go outside for recreation, but I don't get up earlier just to do that. More of, "oh the weather's nice, let's do a bike ride," not "I'm getting up early to do a bike ride."
- deckar01 11y agoSometimes it's nice to get up early and go outside to get a little fresh air before the daily grind.
- zoffix222 11y agoThat's what the balcony is for.
- coldpie 11y agoI live in Minnesota. We had a warm (7 deg C) day a couple of weeks ago after months of sub-freezing temps, and I was reminded of how good it feels to be outside and not miserable. I actually got to the office, made a cup of coffee, then left the office again just to walk around outside and enjoy the outdoors. Probably sounds crazy to people with shorter winters, but you really don't know what you have until you don't have it.
- cylinder 11y agoI was just reflecting on how much life is easier when you have a mild winter (this year, NYC). Aside from temps, the past 12 months here have been incredibly sunny. The summer and fall were perfect. Thank you El Niño.
- dionidium 11y agoIt's not about how the weather is affecting you inside, but whether it's worth it to get up and go experience it outside.
- rsfern 11y agoThe temperature would be a nice addition -- it may be a sunny morning where I am, but it's also 21 degrees (-6 C).
- ci5er 11y agoThat would be nice - I'd definitely be out and about if it was that warm.
- bryanlarsen 11y agoTemperature is much less important than the 4 factors they do list, in my opinion. Right now it's -23C here, with no wind and a bright sun reflecting off of perfect powder. It's so beautiful that it's one of those days you contemplate skipping work -- there are not too many nice skiing days left this season.
- stanislavb 11y agoAnother interesting app/site that I'm using to help me get out of bed is EarlyRisersHub . You check in every day and earn points, and compete with others this way. http://www.earlyrisershub.com http://www.earlyrisershub.com
- treenyc 11y agocan't believe they don't use https for their logins.
- SpeakMouthWords 11y agoI'm assuming you're getting downvoted for your lack of capitalisation and sentence subject, rather than the sentiment. I was going to sign up for this, but now I won't knowing that their login page has not a whiff of security about it.
- treenyc 11y agoOh my, I have no idea I got downvoted. How can you tell?
- SpeakMouthWords 11y agoSorry, only just seeing this. On HN, downvoted comments "fade out" of view. The font gets lighter to start to match the background.
- NegatioN 11y agoInteresting! I've grown a bit tired of gameification of real life with apps, but this made me realize that it's really helpful to Kickstart a new habit.
- stcredzero 11y agoPatreon, if you want to fund the habit long term.
- Grollicus 11y agoIF you're sitting in bed reading HN, then yes, you should get up.
- ZenoArrow 11y agoI often check HN in bed as a way to wake my brain up after sleeping, works for me. Besides, being lazy in bed is not necessarily time wasted.
- fijal 11y agoNaN mm/hour - not interested
- trtmrt 11y agoIt is working something in background but nothing is happening.
- tdkl 11y agoIt apparently needs location access to show anything. No thanks.
- majewsky 11y agoWell duh. How is it supposed to make any statement about the situation at your place when it does not know your location? The only alternative is: return (rand() > RAND_MAX/2) ? "Yes" : "No";
- Kristine1975 11y agoAssuming a perfect random number generator, this would be the only way to make the website's answer truly "unbiased." Right now it has a heavy bias on the weather.
- oneeyedpigeon 11y agoThat's still biased towards a very lazy lifestyle.
- hobarrera 11y agoAnd on the author's taste in weather.
- oneeyedpigeon 11y agoWhat's the harm in a site that includes no third-party resources (other than jquery) knowing that a request has arrived from a <del>vague</del> <ins>specific</ins> location?
- AznHisoka 11y agoIf you're up and reading in bed the answer is almost always yes. You never want your brain to associated laying in bed with anything other than sleep or sex.
- Kristine1975 11y agoWhy not?
- zero_iq 11y agoApparently because it breaks the mental association between being in bed and sleeping, which can exacerbate sleep problems/insomnia and reduce quality of sleep.
- levesque 11y agoAnd what about reading a few minutes to clear your mind of the previous day?
- incongruity 11y agoThat's begging the question (in the original and still proper use =) – the OP's claim has become a bit of a platitude on the internet and yet I've seen scant evidence for it. It may well be there, but, admittedly, as I said above, it doesn't seem to be really all that wise.
- 11y ago
- Grue3 11y agoWouldn't this decision heavily depend on whether, and when I have to go to work today?
- dood 11y agoPersonally, I've found myself sleeping better and feeling happier when I manage to stick to an early start, regardless of whether I'm working or when. For a long time I generally got up as late as I could get away with, but am now very glad I managed to coax myself into being a (relatively) early-riser.
- akie 11y agoThis site assumes that I am the one who decides whether or not I should get out of bed, but since I had a kid three years ago I haven't had much of a say anymore...
- mabbo 11y agoI used to set my alarm for 7am. Now I have a cat who feels 6:50am is more appropriate and is incredibly accurate in his ability to tell me it is that time.
- na85 11y agoBe the Alpha and get a squirt bottle instead of letting a cat dictate when you can and can't sleep.
- tkjef 11y agoA bit harsh for that 10 minutes. I like being woke up by my cat. Most of the time.
- RyanMcGreal 11y agoDanger! This is a progressive condition that will continue to get worse as the cat expects breakfast earlier and earlier.
- timmyelliot 11y agoI completely recommend buying a feeder with a timer, so they don't associate you with their feeding schedule. That solved the problem for me. (But your cats might already be too conditioned to wake you up for it to help.)
- mchahn 11y agoI was impressed when my dog would lie down by his bowl one minute before feeding time. I think he may have been keying of the sunlight position, which is always available where I live.
- Diederich 11y ago
- zoffix222 11y agoEhhh... so it's a weather website? What's that got to do with whether I should get up >_<
- khgvljhkb 11y agoSpoken like a true hacker
- mfoy_ 11y agoIf there's going to be crazy precipitation... maybe I'll just stay in bed. Without checking the weather though, anytime it's rainy in the morning I always feel 300% more lethargic, as if some primal instinct is saying "it's raining out there, better just not."
- drostie 11y agoI like to think it's that the sound of rain is so relaxing that I am just in a state of pure comfort and that's why I don't want to get out of bed. I also have a folder of rain sounds collected off of archive.org and some other places, for when I want to get deep work like programming done. I feel much better at creative tasks when I'm relaxed by rain sounds.
- oldmanjay 11y agoWhat does the bracket thingy mean in light of your comment? It doesn't seem to convey anything related. Perhaps it is the millennial emoticon for "I shit on this"
- ChristianBundy 11y agoYour username matches your comment perfectly, and your comment doesn't seem to convey anything relevant other than "I shit on you". In case you're actually curious, it's a traditionally Eastern emoticon to mean "troubled". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons#Eastern https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons#Eastern
- dionidium 11y ago
- hobarrera 11y agoFunny, it picked up my location perfectly, but the time is off by one hour.
- dancsi 11y agoDoesn't work in the latest Chrome Dev, the dev console says that you need to use HTTPS in order to call getCurrentPosition().
- mikeash 11y agoI expected this to be one of those joke web sites that just says "YES" any time you load it. I don't entirely get the point of "should I get up?" sometimes saying no.
- edwhitesell 11y agoI thought of this too. Or, a 301 to: http://www.isitbeeroclock.com/ http://www.isitbeeroclock.com/ Because most people would need to get out of bed for beer.
- wyldfire 11y agoSince it told me "yes" (because the weather is nice?), I still kinda think that's what it is.
- the_watcher 11y agoIt told me yes because the weather is awful here.
- vinchuco 11y agoI expected it to be a diagnostic questionnaire since it said 'unbiased'
- matheweis 11y agoIt doesn't seem to work in Safari on iOS :(
- deleted 11y ago[deleted]
- mobiuscog 11y agoAsking for location / weather IS NOT UNBIASED.
- innertracks 11y agoThe weather being reported is much more optimistic than what I'm seeing outside my window.
