Interesting observation. But fate? I'm not sure thats the word I'd use. But is it easy for a large company to do so? certainly. It's very easy. Apple's downward spiral in software started when Steve stepped away, and has only gotten worse. I think when there is a curator that can say "this sucks" you'll get a more opinionated, focused product.
