Why does this relate to presidents, I thought Obama is more 'friendlier' to Mexicans than Bush? Isn't the economy now better than when Bush was the president?

Isn't the economy now better than when Bush was the president?
- tptacek 11y agoDepends on when you measure. The economy is better now than it was at the conclusion of Bush's presidency.
- toomuchtodo 11y agoFor certain cohorts, yes. Broadly? I wouldn't go that far.
- ausjke 11y agoif both are true, then it has nothing to do with US economy or president. It might just be Mexico is now good enough to attract them back and keep them.
- adventured 11y agoMexico has seen a solid economic boom the last decade, one that looks set to continue for quite some time. Their unemployment rate is among the lowest in Latin America, and is lower than the US. It can easily be argued the economic opportunities for Mexicans in Mexico, are now greater than the economic opportunities for them in the US when you add in the other additional factors involved in emigrating to the US (general risk, citizenship issues, family, et al.).
- WildUtah 11y agoObama is enforcing the immigration laws much more than Bush, who was an open borders radical. But neither has done much immigration enforcement. The Mexican economy has done very well over the past 30 years. It started very backwards but finally passed the US economy for the first time in opportunities for many people in 2007. That was partly because of the US crisis. Mexico has continued to grow since then.
- dragonwriter 11y ago> It started very backwards but finally passed the US economy for the first time in opportunities for many people in 2007. That's an extraordinarily precise date for meeting a very vague threshold ("passed the US economy...in opportunities for many people"). What does this mean in concrete terms, and where is the evidence supporting that it was achieved in 2007.
- WildUtah 11y agoTwo thousand seven was picked because the US economy had the beginning of a steep downward plunge starting then while Mexico's economy was steady. It's also the year op identifies for the immigration turnaround.
