Never heard of reclaim the records until now. What they are doing is amazing! I was even moved to donate, even though I have no US ancestry ("Donation Confirmation Thank you for supporting Reclaim The Records!")

They definitely use it in academia; it gives poor PhD students a nice way to work with GIS data (sure, you can pay for a student ArcGIS license but then good luck after graduation..) One thing I wish QGIS had though is a command line interf

That was the case in my older neato, 5+ years away. But my botvac had performed flawlessly for the last two years (and the app app works amazingly, including saving older cleanup maps, sharing the dirt in status, etc)

Early on (as a heavy Stata and Python user) I tried Julia and got quite discouraged by its messy treatment of missing values (and weights, etc). I've also tried R but also found lots of inconsistencies, so not enough reason to switch,

In many countries, property taxes are local and don't go to schools (which have funding from income taxes i.e. from the state). So it's not like the foreign investors are beneficial in any way, besides maybe paying their bit of wa

Is there a reason for that? Here (US) a lot of people buy stuff on a whim and when they decide they don't like it, they just return it, as Amazon usually doesn't charge anything. I always though that as a huge cost that ends up b

Statistically speaking, he didn't. What he paid was way lower than the expected vsñue of what he'll get. That's the entire idea of a pyramid pension scheme.

Were the benchmarks run on a cooled room? Some years ago, as a student, I paid $$$ for a Toshiba with 4 cores and hyperthreading, and I could only run them well on the winter or in a very cool room. In the summer it would reach 100C and co

I wonder the same thing. How the hell do the economics of these things work, if users pay almost nothing and birders get so much money daily?

Most mortgages in the US are sold to Fannie and Freddy (government-sponsored enterprises) [1]. These GSEs in fact commit themselves to buy mortgages at a predetermined rate [2], and I suspect this rate is the main driver for the rates ban

At least the one I respect more (Samuelson) has a decent quote: Disagree. Reason: 'This would be a great idea if the market for service provision was competitive, but is less obvious with our current market.' On the other hand, i

It doesn't measure the impact. For instance, 7.0 earthquakes can have a vastly different effect depending on the depth of the epicenter, the length of the earthquake, proximity to populated areas, proximity to faults. EG: https:/

To double down on what user5994461 said, that's indeed a ponzi scheme and quite stupid if you know current population trends. It also creates quite perverse incentives, as older folks want to reduce their retirement age (even as they l
