Thanks! Tilemaker is a great tool and probably the closest alternative (no intermediate db). The most recent benchmarks I saw though were around a day for the planet, so roughly 10x longer than flatmap. If Edit: benchmark link https:/

Creator here. I maintain https://onthegomap.com as a side project. I originally used Google Maps API but after their price hike switched to OpenStreetMap data. I self-host GraphHopper for routing and tried to self-host OpenMapTi

The jre is deprecated in favor of jlink, they have an explanation here: https://blog.adoptium.net/2021/10/jlink-to-produce-own-runti...

For digitalocean at least, there is quite a large difference between the “basic” droplets and ones with dedicated vcpus. In this table, they both look the same. I’ve seen 2-4x differences between the two: https://rob006.net/

Yes, ArcGIS World Imagery https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=10df2279f9684e4a9f6... - from everything I can gather in their docs and talking with sales reps, it is fine to use with proper attribution, which took

The site shows google ads when the screen is big enough, luckily that covers the monthly hosting costs. Would definitely like to find a value-adding (rather than reducing) way to cover the costs though. I've been thinking about adding

Glad to see this. I’m a long time mapbox gl js user for https://onthegomap.com which costs $300-400 per month for running my own graphhopper routing servers and Stadia Maps tile hosting. It would cost over $3000 per month to upg

I’ve referred to this resource in a couple of talks I’ve given on data vis. My advice is always to learn about different kinds of standard charts that are out there, then when visualizing a dataset use the best combination of words, numbers

I used to use d3 for all parts of data visualizations, but lately I find myself using d3 utilities just to manipulate data to prepare for visualization, but then using a front end framework like react to render to the dom. This feels a lot

Another variation: leave a failing unit test that will pass when you implement the next thing you were planning on doing.

I often see masters in CS as a way that people from other backgrounds transition to CS. I got a bachelors in EE and then a masters in CS. Don’t worry about the piece of paper though, focus on what topics you are missing the theoretical foun

Very cool! I’ve done visualizations on similar size datasets by mapping tsne output to fake latitude/longitude coordinates and rendering it with mapbox gl. It feels like a hack, but then you get all of the panning/zooming interact

I’ve been using Scala as my main programming language for over 5 years. I’ve found my “plateau of enlightenment” by sticking to a subset of the features: case classes, for comprehensions, futures, immutability, pattern matching. By avoiding

Nice! Is this open source or based on an open source project? I’m interested in doing something similar for one of my projects.

I’m curious how much internet usage is up in general. My site that people use to map running and walking routes is up about 2.5x as well since around March 16.

I’ve been doing the same thing (todo.txt) for a while, surprised to learn it’s not just me. I like separating out brainstorm.txt, that would help keep it focused.

I agree, when I use d3 and react together I tend to use all of the non-DOM-manipulating d3 utilities for transforming data then react for rendering the DOM. D3 is a swiss army knife of utilities for data visualization, and as you point out

Yes, as soon as you use the "orange cloud" they have access to traffic, which lets them insert their value-added services for content delivery - and apparently also store and analyze the content of your traffic.

It is deeply concerning that regular employees at cloudflare have access to analyze the content of user traffic like this.

Thanks! The quality is great but I need around 250k 512x512 satellite tile loads per day so 250k / (4 tiles per “view”) * (30 days per month) - (50k free requests per month) * ($0.50 per 1000 views) = $912.50 per month. Is my understan
