I'll see your blue hole and raise a "Blautopf" near where I grew up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blautopf Rayleigh scattering on nanoscale limestone particles!

You still have to pick the right one of the older APIs, though. In the 90s there were plenty of other networking protocols and APIs to choose from but TCP/IP and sockets won out.

That was the fun thing about Usenet back then - lots of open exchange between key people and anyone could join in (which eventually was its undoing).

Chicken coop auto-door opener so I don't have to get up at 4AM in the summer. It was just a basic Arduino system but I learned that large canning jars make excellent enclosures: waterproof, reusable, easily modified and replacable lid.

Good to know. I also associate lager with Pilsener and northern Germany so I realize now that I was totally off. Also the connection between Reinheitsgebot and ale/lager yeasts was new. I didn't know that the type of yeast was spe

I make carbonated water at home and I get a LOT of CO2 into my bottles. It definitely tasted sour so I add a tiny bit of baking soda as and acid regulator.

Ah, the promise of VLIW. I played with one VLIW architecture when it came out (TI 320 C6000) and it looked exciting but after a while we got tired of waiting for the SW magic to materialize, I think similar problems have generally been the

I see, so the argument is someone should use semaphores to implement higher-level abstractions that are easier to use? That would make some sense.

Sorry, I was unclear. I think STEM is very important but I don't think we need to force everyone into it. I think there are enough STEM-interested kids that will choose this route, if you start with the assumption "STEM is so impo

Why? To me semaphores are the thing you can use to implement a counting producer/consumer thing, a mutex, a critical section, a flag for an interrupt handler. Are you referring specifically to a counting semaphore as opposed to the oth

I don't know, complaining about lack of STEM and throwing in a side-swipe to equity thinking isn't that helpful to answer what we need to run our fabs. In my experience you need a ton of people with practical thinking skills, good

You can see both sides - what do you think would be an effective outreach to the rural undereducated population? Snomobile mechanic could be one stepping stone to a technical education, more of that kind of thing?

Keeping weeds and other unwanted plants out is really the challenge, even if you don't remove the grass. In San Diego I saw a lot of color-coordinated crushed rock with succulents, looks pretty nice but a bit sterile.

You're my spirit animal now. I drink massive amounts of strong black tea with milk and I agree, has to be absolutely boiling and I preheat the teapot. At work I put a teabag in hot water and zap it in the microwave for 20-30s, key to d

Interesting one. In my ear "Biere" would only sound right when referring to distinct beer types. I think this is more a case where spoken German would prefer "3 bier bitte" but technically it should be "3 Biere"

What about "police", is that a mass noun? I feel like my English is pretty much error free at this point but I still sometimes mess this one up. I might say "the police is coming" (as I'm running the other way) but

Agreed, it's a fine anecdote but easy to draw the wrong conclusion of "rules hamper progress and counterproductive". I think the main challenge is to attract the right talent to the rule-making body.

I'd qualify that as "almost no non-programmers know". Forward slashes are so useful in languages that use \ as an escape sequence that most programmers do know this.

We do all the time. In industrial automation COM ports are still shockingly popular, although it's usually the USB emulated variety. On a lot of our development and on some of our production tools we end up with COM20 or COM30, not bec

Right. Back in the 90s I worked on a network server to allow AppleTalk clients into DOS or OS/2 based networks. The Mac users enjoyed their filename freedom but the PC clients had trouble with the super-weird 8.3 short names. You could

This was one of our bonus homework problems in Höhere Mathematik in engineering school in my misspent youth. I tried the factorization but got stuck. The offical solution was the log one shown in the article, somehow not as satisfying.

Pretty good because most of my current value to my employer is based on confidential information we keep hidden from the public. If we were to feed all that to an AI it might be a different story.

The ones that bring in billions in profits are less dependent, of course, but even those will carry loans on their books. Why not, if money is free. Each large corporation has essentially an investment bank on the inside.
