It's amazing how we were worried whether big modern companies would show any real resistance towards states engaging in cultural suppression, racism, censorship and genocide. In fact, they jump at the opportunity to help with it!

It actually depends on the elasticity of demand and the (marginal) cost curves how the surplus is distributed. What is true is that in a perfectly competitive market, there is no deadweight loss. The blog post, however, is wrong.

A system where women are forced or pressured to marry undesirable men benefits welfare in general? Otherwise, we need to deal with the very real suffering of lonely people.

I concede that this is a problem, but one that is not limited to companionship AIs and one that, if it is to be solved, will have to be solved in a larger setting that includes the other areas where it is pertinent

But what is the solution? I deeply reject the incel rhethoric (not by you but generally) that society must somehow nudge or influence the choices of women such that unattractive men also can find partnership, a demand that is most often pre

It's not about compassion and companionship in a broader sense of society. It's about romantic partnership. And the harsh reality is that some people will be alone. Especially in China, I think it is really fair to say that for ec

For what it is worth, I have the Sennheiser Momentum Bluetooth headset. I am an audio weirdo who used a lot of professional headphones over the years, and I like the Sennheiser sound. Too often have I been disappointed by "premium bran

Any sort of statistical or econometric estimator is typically published as an R package. So for example, I recently saw a paper with a quite complex estimator based on dynamic panels and network (or spacial) interdependence that could ident

Very cool, however now I found out I am apparently someone who looks unusual compared to the average person. In particular, I have naturally blond (very blond) hair, blue-green eyes, but a black beard. This seems to confuse the AI. None of

It's ridiculous but I agree. Even if facebook blurs the data, we all know full well that it internally uses the full data and all faces or personal details it captures. Facebook has demonstrated time and time again that it is an organi

This is partly related to FPGA implementation instead of GPUs. Interestingly, GPUs (unoptimized 32bit implementation as per the authors) outperform FPGA's in this white paper for dense networks. Sparse networks were not tested on GPU.

As a student I owned the cheapest OKI laser printer. Once it broke so I called them. On the same day, they sent an actual engineer to my apartment to fix it. Maybe they thought I was a business or something. No, just a guy in a rented room.

What you are describing seems to be essentially the process of science: Develop, step by step, the causal mechanisms at play until you solve the problem. It should not be underestimated that our collective knowledge of causal inference with

The majority of the books listed in the first link in these comments are about whether and when we can determine causality given observational data - data where the system is perturbed, just not by us (and not as we would ideally like).
