Which myth exactly? Also, swapping memory in and out of the address space is a rather costly operation. And it becomes infeasible if the process's working set grows larger than the available address space [thrashing].

Living in the present. Time spent on dwelling over past happy moments is time wasted. The only reason I could imagine for looking into the "happy" PAST so is because I'm not happy NOW. But if I'm not happy now, dwelling over the past isn't

Sigh, yet another article giving advice about how to use make as a kind of general-purpose language. It's not. Forget all the crap with wildcards, conditionals, filename globbing, etc. and use it for what it is: a program that takes as inpu

That's undefined behavior meaning that anything might happen, including appearing to work [most of the time]. C allows casts between two data pointers and between two function pointers, but not cast that cross the data/function boundary. An

6.3.2.3.7 allows for conversion between pointers to data ("objects") and 6.3.2.3.8 allows for conversion between pointers to functions; there is no provision for casting between data and function pointers. 6.3.2.3.5 and .6 allow for abritra

Not undefined behavior, really? Run it on a 64-bit SPARC system and see if it works. Not to mention that this implementation is dog-slow (two rather slow syscalls [mmap/munmap] for each apply-invocation).

Sigh, if the program is relying on undefined behavior [like this one], it's not C. Plus, gcc has __builtin_apply as extension.

That's what happens when programmability (JavaScript, Java, Flash, plugins...) is added to a presentation format (HTML). Maybe this is the right time to revive Gopher and give Usenet a fresh breath of life.

Now that Intel has announced Xeon Phi, I dare to hope that "gpu programming" will become an artifact of the past, so "open-source drivers" will become a moot point anyway. (Xeon Phi runs linux as a local OS.)

As far as I've understood this article, the relevant source is available. So what's the problem? Why should Intel spend time and resources to integrate it with the mainstream, esp. if this is a short-lived processor family?

Because 1) bool is a useless type in C and C++ since it's an arithmetic type, 2) it's no clearer than an int. (consider a function that returns true on failure, logic being that the rest of the program should be aborted.) You expect that

"Supports", "works" and "is usable" are three totally different things. I doubt that E&C is truly usable since even much simpler things -- for example, data breakpoints when debugging native+managed code -- is unsupported in VS2010. (Ne
