Unless you're switching from e.g. Java to e.g. Prolog or Erlang (or Haskell...), is it really useful for learning a new language? I mean, when learning a new language, the basic syntax is the easiest part anyway, but the ecosystem/

As Georgian, I confirm that it is safe here :) except crazy drivers on the road... Maybe we could even organize some mini HN meetup, here in Tbilisi...

I don't know, I guess it requires a different mindset/discipline. I can't imagine myself happy doing agile coaching. Here in Georgia 99.999% of projects are CRUD, that's one of the reason I work remotely for more than 8

Indeed. Also Groovy++ (aka Groovy with static typing) is worth mentioning.

Just one thing to point out - there are lots of remote jobs in web and mobile app dev space already. But C++, systems, non-web engineering jobs are rare in REMOTE space.

Shriram, thank you for the PLAI and I'm looking forward to take a look on PAPL as well. But one thing I don't like - types (static typing) for the implementation language is an afterthought in your books. This happened to PLAI, an

Thanks for the good points! Bolt and LMDB seem approachable, and I'm especially interested how ACID compliance is implemented and how to check/prove the correctness of it...

Hey Ben, what (refs/books/lectures) would you recommend for someone who is interested to learn theory behind these kind of DBs and implement it from scratch?

Thanks, but under "systems" I meant systems programming, not sysadmin stuff. At the moment I'm working on a great gig, I just shared my experience of finding good remote gigs in general.

Also, one thing to remember - jobs are not constant entities, you could have find them in this month but half of them would disappear for next month... i.e. timing matters. In my experience, finding remote jobs for popular techs are quite e

It is not. Nothing is hard if you are interested i.e. have fun out of it. It is about personal preferences, what you enjoy and what you don't. That's it.

I've first encountered these techniques in Alexandrescu's Modern C++ Design. The most interesting for me was how one arrives to such solutions [in C++]. Later, I read SICP (which was the first time I touched FP) and everything got

I meant that the canonical quicksort algorithm which Hoare came up uses in-place partitioning. Probably you can still call "quicksort" to these nice snippets (be it in Prolog, Erlang or Haskell), but mentioning the fact about the

One question for long time Emacs users - do you notice any significant changes compared to e.g. 10 or 20 years ago versions of Emacs? Same question applies to vim users I believe... Like, for instance, there are huge advancements from MSVC
