These goods are scarce in the economic sense, even if you think they are “cheap”. They are not free to produce. We do have enough food to feed the world, but that would mean your food gets more expensive as other people consume what would o

Because we needed geographic distribution so that we don't end up hairpinning our users, and they only run a single service so the value prop is much lower. We use route 53 to do geodns across a number of cheap instances around the wor

We're in the same camp with a cluster ~2x as large for Squawk[1] and it would cost us many multiples in the cloud (excluding our TURN relays which aren't k8s). However, the one killer feature that the cloud still has over self hos

Any examples? Given that WASM can't manipulate the DOM, I'm suspicious of this claim.

I'm not sure I would agree with this. As with all things, it depends on the task, but "compute heavy" these days means likely working with a distributed framework that abstracts away the underlying process architecture, letti

The issue with webrtc is once you step out of the side-project domain, you have to confront the endless implementation differences between browsers, whether it's undocumented SDP behavior, different codecs, non-conformant behavior for

STUN is only useful if you're trying to negotiate a P2P connection, which isn't the case when using an SFU. If everything you're doing is going through an SFU then you don't need STUN.

Bootstrapping a distributed swarm is always a tricky proposition. Bittorrent clients use a few endpoints to bootstrap their dht, and then upgrade to p2p after that. I think that's a good compromise, especially if you can have a number

Very cool, would love something like this. Your video gives a fairly straightforward incident response which traditional tools would work equally well on. Can you describe a situation that Zebrium does better than legacy tools? Perhaps a hy

What you describe are called key frames. Nearly all video uses them. Recorded video for seeking, and steaming for well, steaming. You missed the entire point of the comment.

I can’t speak to other P2P tech, but I presume so. As far as I know, no other P2P tech runs at a big level, sandboxed abstraction of what’s really going on. And therein lies the rub of WebRTC. It was supposed to be a portable high level sta

Another nitpick: WebRTC connections are extremely fragile and a pain to herd. We’ve had to build both data and audio keepalives into Squawk[1] to ensure that we can hold connections for long durations (running in the background 24/7).

This is one of the reasons we’ve had to go the dreaded electron route and really push the desktop app: it’s just not feasible to deliver the same UX across browsers/OS. Really frustrating. I’ll add one to your list: 4. I wish RTCRtpTra

We have experimented with a P2P multicast setup and WebRTC makes this very difficult to do. Ultimately what we’re rolling out soon, and what others like Zoom have done, is to send media over WebRTC data channels. The media channels are amaz

Typically, it's switching from PTT into another context: we often start short conversations, and then realize there's more work to be done and we slack the results of that to each other.

I get that. I have plenty of time where I zone out of Squawk. But there are definitely projects/periods where I need to constantly be checking in with a dozen people and various subsets of that dozen. If that's not a problem you f
