I apologize for the uncharitable description. It was more of an organizational issue. They could have picked any other tool to execute a self-inflicted DoS and I would have been upset with that instead.

I find it disruptive as a developer in an organization that used to run it very frequently. It aggressively crawls your infrastructure and blows up AWS API calls with low rate limits, like the EMR cluster description operations.

Mobile GPUs are a sad joke in general. Looking at GPU benchmarking sites shows the Radeon Pro Vega 20 in my MBP as competitive with desktop parts from 2012 or 2013.

External monitors force the use of higher-power discrete graphics. See an adjacent comment about eGPU if you want to control this better. Edit: admittedly, this is a bit like returning to a desktop...

Nobody is on Market to get to a destination on Market. You can’t park for the vast majority of it, and there are literally no driveways. This change mostly eliminates through traffic that drags down bus service.

I'm about 75% joking: restore a new cluster from a snapshot for horizontal scaling. They did launch a feature along those lines, because my joke suggestion probably doesn't scale organizationally: take a look at Concurrency Scalin

Sorry, I noticed you made the same observation in another thread after you got dogpiled by everyone; I left my question over there. Yeah, I've had to contend with that problem before -- hard to imagine how I forgot about it :)

Isn't that a weakness of any data dependency? I could push a new service that deprecates a field and supplies a replacement. I still have to communicate it and get downstream consumers to migrate. Or is the problem that reporting teams

I don't think you're right back to a monolith with centralized reporting. Remember, microservices doesn't mean JSON-RPC over HTTP. Passing updates extracted via change data capture and forwarding them to another reporting sys

Hmm, I wonder why they didn't push people towards DMS instead? This S3 export offering certainly commands a premium price for the privilege.

The snapshots already deliver your desired functionality. This dumps it as a different format. In fact, it probably depends on restoring the snapshot to a database in order to implement this format change. I think this is a replacement for

I think you have to travel outside the US for examples in the second paragraph. I immediately thought of Shinjuku.

Yes! Things like Spring Boot are actually a reaction to the days of Java EE and the web of Java-centric technologies. This always confused me as a newer developer. Vendors competed with each other with different JavaEE implementations (WebS

Definitely exciting news! For some reason I was picturing that you might have difficulty building things like xgboost or getting an optimized version of BLAS, but that doesn't seem to be the case. (the former is supported and the latte

Python libraries frequently aren't only in Python, and use native bindings. Node packages less so, but it still happens. Java might surprise you, too, especially on EMR. I've found math, compression, and machine learning libraries

I still haven't figured out why "well it's just a misdemeanor" means the justice system totally gives up on that type of crime. Everybody discussing Prop 47 talks about this like this is an obvious thing to assume. It st

Try long pressing and then sliding the post up. You'll get the same menu without popping into the full post view. I don't think it counts as strongly, because I've been able to eliminate a lot of things this way.

I think we're in agreement. The numbers through Honey probably look good, and the other affiliates probably don't have a good handle on how frequently they're getting scooped by other affiliates.

They do care. Some affiliate rates are far higher than that. Affiliate comes out of retailer marketing budgets. They set the rates thinking they're paying for certain types of customers from certain participants. Honey is getting paid

Well... their new office is on the SF2G Bayway route, but the whole area is absolutely unfriendly to bikes. Use Google Maps and look at the intersection of Gateway Blvd and Oyster Point Blvd. It's special.

This doesn't apply for contractors, does it? Additionally, it's still illegal for an employer to let you end up below federal minimum wage, tipped or not. But shady places are happy to steal from their employees.

Hm, mine says $9.50. Fiber vs DSL rental price? I know I can return the router, but what I wish I could really "return" is the phone service that adds a ton of taxes.

Markus Winand's write-up at https://use-the-index-luke.com/blog/2016-07-29/on-ubers-choi... really drives this point home. InnoDB has favorable characteristics for what they're trying to do.
