JVM startup time is not great but it's not horrible either. Especially in the context of desktop apps that are often started once and kept running for a long time. With some care it is definitely possible to spin up a JVM and display a

This is a great writeup and good to see I'm not the only one looking at JVM for cross platform desktop apps. Recently I've been experimenting with TornadoFX and it is very nice to work with. It's a Kotlin wrapper for JavaFX p

An interesting concept. Are there limits to just creating a new account when the 100 posts are used? It could be interesting to have an account with a maximum number of posts, use the last post to announce your next account and thus periodi

That sounds logical as they kind of perform the same tasks with the difference being that systemd manages workloads on a single system and k8s manages workloads on a cluster.

It's all trade-offs. k8s is feature-rich, flexible and configurable but that also means high complexity. Simpler tools might not tick all the feature boxes. As long as your applications follow 12-factor principles it shouldn't be

This email seems to be about 6 months before they released GWT 1.0. Their toolkit to compile Java to JS for web UI's. They likely already used it internally by then. If I remember correctly at the time they also used lots of Java on th

I've seen this principle come up a few times but I don't think I fully understand it. For example, assuming a passage in a story where a protagonist enters person X's house and a particular room is described in much detail. T

I totally agree with you about SSL. That's what I meant with abstracting I/O on top of platform-primitives. Similar to how the Reqwest crate in Rust-land uses fetch on WASM and something else for other platforms. For the developer

The first point in the article is the hardest one: Selecting a tech stack, specifically the shared code component that holds the business logic and interfaces with network and storage I/O. Tools like Flutter and React Native are pretty

Yes, I don't see much potential or a "de-appled" iPhone experience. With Apples tight control over hardware and software it would just be an endless cat and mouse game. I would rather see efforts focussed on making open sourc

Any service that broadcasts licensed music to users is going to have issues like this someday. See how tricky it is to have legal background music on a Twitch stream. I think the best way forward for this kind of thing is to not broadcast t

JetBrains IDEs can require some tweaking of the jvm startup params. Mostly initial and maximum heap size. The defaults are rather low and for projects with lots of dependencies it needs a lot of memory to keep indices and cache warm. I usua

I came here to say this. It depends on how you define Computer Scientist. In the academic sense of the word, and in "low level" software development fields like game engines, databases, systems, embedded, etc knowing math is inval
