In the 80s I worked on BPCS, an early ERP system, and yes it was coded in RPG2, and RPG3. Mind blowingly hard to understand the source code but I credit my efforts then with later finding AWK so easy and logical. IBM had also just brought

Please share as I would like to see what you have built. What I like about this is that ides of a catalog which is what most business systems have in the form of their records and objects. Giving an AI accessible structure to this gets AI i

Reality bites. JS devs have tried to use JS for everything and found limits. It isn't a one language to rule the all. Welcome back to the world of needing the right tools for the job.

As a lifelong procrastinator this article reads like "that other Napoleon" aka Eisenhower and his "delegate" for anything neither important nor urgent. I use it when I'm one of several recipients in emails To: addr

Glad I wasn't the only one to suspect AI slop. The language is too self promoting and vacuous in parts. Just doesn't feel like a human wrote it to me.

Great article. I think of AI when considering where and how to use as Automated Intelligence and when thinking about risk AI can also mean Accelerated Incompetence. Which end of this scale you end up on depends on taking the hype or systems

Can't Amazon be sued for false advertising by having "buy" on the button when it is actually "rent"? #justasking genuine question on interpretation of the term in USA.

IIRC is means a pictorial definition of a value so the above is a float printable using 12 positions which for maximum value would be as 999999999.99 While a PIC X(10) Means character string length 10. It was defined in era of fixed width

First job out of school was manufacturing systems support in COBOL and finance systems support in Assembler. As someone who has dealt with 40cm deep line flow stacks of source code for both the COBOL is way easier to hold in my brain. YMMV

Boring old me would be reaching for mojo in order to have types that actually are "real" rather than just an editing overlay of decorators/DSL/tooling.

Dragon used as part of a phrase to describe some demons. So a poor translation tool maybe would see daemon as misspelling of demon and render "dragon". More wild speculation for the curious :-)

I don't speak Japanese so took a left field shot using Chinese - simplified characters used because that easier for me as non Chinese person to write. From everyday experience some really weird phrases are people recycling old express

I don't see the FCC cancelling news shows on which Trump lies. Double standards driven by politics and why the govt orgs need career staff and not political players. Rule of Law anyone?

Still using COBOL too. I know of a system that has both! Once it works reliably most businesses want to treat code like plumbing - don't touch it until it's broken.

This is great. I was a huge fan of typora for writing docs a few an ago and now do all in obsidian. In both the editing is plaintext but the visible text is rendered inline with formatting. Love what you have done and will use in a project

Ex COBOL dev here. Started at NCR on COBOL for minis and mainframes. Then built stuff on Wang VS COBOL for ERP systems until 93. Quite a few other languages since then but been a Product Manager for past 20+ years.

by zoom6628 1y ago
Yep. I have recently used prompts to ask for COBOL code solution so I can compare it to other languages I also know to check quality of the answer. So far no mistakes.
