I’ve always wanted to bring some scuba equipment and dive into the one-foot-deep lake when it’s there, just so I could tell everyone that my deepest dive was 282 feet below sea level.

Can someone explain to me why “Show HN” and “Ask HN” posts are always, always in hard-to-read light gray? Is there some cabal that automatically downvotes such posts? Is there something intrinsic to The Algorithm that penalizes such pos

You're completely missing the point. Unfortunately, it seems you lack the capability to see the point—to wit, you're not special. So, as the Lord commanded us in Isaiah 1:16 — I wash my hands of thee.

Well, I guess one way of looking at it is would you rather have the guy who truthfully told you that it was okay to steal $1 from the register, or the guy who lied about saying any amount was unacceptable?

Why do you think tagging is a thing? It’s a way for gangs to mark their turf, plain and simple. Tagging means gang activity, which means violent crime. And your assertion about the LA crime rate shrinking for years is incorrect: https:

It's really weird that Hacker News has become so full of Windows apologists in the last few years. It wasn't all that long ago that Slashdot was depicting Bill Gates as the Borg. Where did we go wrong?

I once wrote a PL/pgSQL function to return a 1x1 BMP file given arbitrary R, G, and B values, to display a background color for FileMaker records. Still use it to this day as a matter of fact.

If your dodecahedron were essentially your “resume”, you’d go out of your way to keep it safe from thieves. Besides, stealing one wouldn’t do you much good, as you’d be discovered as a fraud pretty quickly based on the quality of your work.
