shim has an EFI variable to control its verbosity, you can set it to output all the gory details with e.g. `mokutil --set-verbosity true`, and on a glance there are some tools on Windows too to modify EFI vars

I think Windows BSOD including QR code was pretty clever idea, although unfortunately it's halfbaked in that it's just a fixed generic URL instead of something specific to the error.

Major question for me is, are the grubs that are getting rejected completely unpatched, or were they patched by distros without updating the "security generation"? I'd be also really curious to hear how MS was attempting to d

I don't see why you couldn't update grub from Windows, its just EFI binary in ESP after all.

The post for most parts was neat, not disagreeing there. But wrapping it up as some sort of empowering life lesson feels so utterly out of touch that I felt like reminding that it is huge privilege to be able to do this sort of thing. Someo

From ecosystem point of view I think all language specific package managers are crap. Instead of fragmenting the wider ecosystem on language boundaries, we should be looking more for language independent solutions. Nix is cool, as are buck2

Bingo, this is what I was referring to in my comment. And yes, I assume it is quite a lot of labor. But I feel that lot of this perceived friction is from people trying to cut corners and avoid doing that labor, while still getting the bene

> TBH, I'm ready to go back to windows. I'm ready to go back to Windows 7. But between Windows 11 (or 12 or whatever), ios ("macos"), and Linux, it's not so simple anymore. It's just bad options all around.

I know python packaging has it's issues, but so far I personally have gotten pretty far with plain pip. The biggest shift to me was switching from original virtualenv to built-in venv module. On the other hand, if I wanted to be really

I wonder if there is something that could be done on language design level to have better "sympathy" to memory allocation, i.e. built upon having mmap/munmap as primitives instead of malloc/free; where language patterns

I've always wondered why Steam hasn't gotten into Android game market. Feels like it would be just free money for them, and gamers like me would be happy if they could play some of the games from their library on mobile.

I just wish people would stop using the phrase "seconds since epoch" (or equivalent) unless that is exactly what they mean. I wonder what does select time_sub(time_date(2011, 11, 19), time_date(1311, 11, 18)); return?

Common ssh (port) forwarding has lots of shortcomings that make it far less practical than X forwarding for this sort of use. Sketching out this idea, what I'd want is that ssh would set some standardized env var pointing to unix socke

Many people here mention SSH as one motivating uses for TUIs. It's a shame that we don't have standardized HTTP forwarding over SSH that would work as seamlessly as X forwarding can work.

GUI is not intrinsically any more resource-heavy than TUI; ultimately you need to render stuff on screen somehow and get user input, and going through tty layer just is extra bloat.

Btw regarding the camera sensitivity, if you shoot raw and just shoot the different colors separately, you can mostly ignore the spectral characteristics of the sensor. Debayering might end up being very different than standard though.

If you want to get serious on this, get good quality color chart[1] and use that to compare different light sources etc. Just eyeballing resulting colors from random photos and guesstimating the various spectral curves gets you only so far.
