My beef about MySQL used to be technical but in the last 3 - 4 years that has evaporated, and now it is purely about the license. I cannot understand why anybody uses a database for which the only official client side drivers are GPL, rat

Indeed, this is very much what I already do. For all non-functional aspects, IE6 is not catered for. For example, transparent pngs are assumed supported. If you visit in IE6 you will see lots of blocky icons and images for rounded corne

At this point, it matters not what happens to IE market share. It will not ever get lower than 20% and it will not ever get higher than 90% again. As long as it stays in that range we can know with surety that a) all web sites will still

For those terrified of actually answering the phone, and who dread the idea of having to check voice mail constantly (like me), there are outfits that will take your call and transcribe it to an email for you. eg: http://www.phonetag.com

There's a lot happening with it ... I think it's main advantage is that it completely seamlessly integrates with java and inherits it's basic syntax from there, so anyone familiar with java or with existing stuff in java (and that's a lot

A pretty nice survey and well balanced post - nice! My only gripe - it missed out on my favorite - Groovy - which is my favorite because it combines the best features of most of the others.

I'm not sure you can generalise anything from the Agora ... it was always a bit unbelievable that a minnow sized vendor could outdo every other cell phone provider on the planet to become the second Android phone. My guess is that these "i

It actually makes a lot of sense. JQuery is a pleasure to use for general UI manipulation, but (to my mind) it just doesn't have the consistency and quality of YUI when it comes to UI widgets / framework. And honestly, it will always be ha

There's something terribly horribly wrong with either your database setup or your queries. 100,000 entries is miniscule. Do you have indexes on the join columns in your queries? (But do use Postgres, it's better than MySQL for most cases!

First: this is a really interesting thread and I have a lot of respect for your experience. But is it really better to statically allocate resources to threads? You may have 8 cores on a box and 1 of them burning and 7 of them cruising.

As others have said, stop fighting the language and embrace it. For the Java haters, here's a Java one-liner that is not much longer (though I'll admit, uglier) than all the rest: result = join(new ArrayList<String>(){{ addAll(list

Since you mention eclipse I would say "proceed with caution". There are two issues: a) Eclipse itself is less usable and less stable. I have colleagues who are unable to debug, experience crashes etc. which I never see on Linux / Windows.
