xeyes is also a great way to tell if you're in a Wayland session. If it tracks your mouse always, it's X. If it only tracks in its own window, it's Wayland.

And somehow Fedora always seemed to do systemd and pulseaudio correctly. It's Debian and Ubuntu who somehow manage to make it into garbage. Is it intentional? Is it just because they use ancient, old versions? If indeed they want to be

Just how loudly do you think people would complain if PulseAudio decided to link in JACK and replace it, instead of getting out of the way (and becoming a JACK client itself, I believe).

Not sure what you mean about stuck at 2 GHz? My current Dell laptop and the previous one used 45 W CPUs and can hold a sustained 3.2 GHz while compiling with 8 threads. That immediately drops as soon as I start using the iGPU or even the Nv

I believe Windows 95 has trouble with CPUs that are too fast and needs to be patched to handle it. I think I also read somewhere that older Windows (and some other operating systems) don't handle modern TCP/IP very well. A TCP ses

I read about one recently where an evil user program was able to bring a 28 core Xeon to its knees. Apparently a LOCK INC on an unaligned value that hangs over a page boundary forces this super-advanced CPU to lock everything in every cache

I haven't looked recently but several years ago I was shocked to discover the GNU libstdc++ didn't use strchr or memchr. It used a hand-coded for loop because it was a template for various kinds of character. There was no speciali

On a Windows 10 VM set to 2 GB of RAM, Windows idles at about 1.1 GB. On a 16 GB Windows it uses about 7.5 GB. All of that seems to swap out or go away somewhere if I get busy with Visual Studio. On a 64 GB Windows it seems to idle at about

HiDPI? Um, what? I've been running Wayland gnome-shell on Fedora since Fedora 25, on a Dell m3800 and now a Dell XPS 15, both with 4K internal displays. I often connect to external monitors or projectors, either 1080p or 4K. Wayland ha

A function could be compiled assuming the passed argument is always 2. All of the code for other values is just left out. As long as the compiled code has a check for values that are not 2 this code works great. It isn't correct though

I don't understand why anyone would run btrfs with MD RAID. That configuration loses the ability to recover from corrupted blocks. All that MD can do is in response to actual reported drive errors. If one of the drives accepts the writ

ZFS is OK I suppose, but it isn't native. So you have to jump through hoops to use it, just like Nvidia binary graphics drivers. BTRFS works well. I've used it for a NAS since 2012. It started with two mirrored 2 TB WD RED drives.

Your problem with the Dell was likely its Nvidia GPU. Even if you aren't using it, the Linux drivers seem to leave it "on". You have to actually unload or never load the drivers. My XPS 15 gets six hours, easy on Fedora 29.
