I like that they ARE buckets of bytes on Unixen. As an analogy take the common text file. Would you like it if the read() and write() system calls looked at the file extension and refused to write non-ASCII or non-Unicode into it? I would n

I didn't write it, but I ran into a problem on Windows when pulling a Git repo that had INSTALL (the instructions to the user) and install (a script that ran the installation).

If net neutrality means the ISP cannot filter and shape at my request then I don't want it. You realize that reliable VoIP requires ISP side traffic shaping, right?

I've got six WD Reds and can't hear them at all. I put them in a Fractal Design R5 silent case. :) It's a home NAS but I figure I can shut it down to replace a drive. No need for drive bays, neat as they are.

Eh, journalctl isn't that bad on a spinning drive. The recent parts of the journal are usually in file cache, so if you use the limiters, like "journalctl --since today" or "journalctl -e"; or view in reverse orde

Linux can use kpatch to upgrade the kernel while it is running. The difficult part is writing and validating the actual patch. I recall that the only people writing kpatches charge a lot of money for them and only provide them to their payi

Easily moving from bytes to strings and back is the only way it makes sense for Go. It runs on POSIX for the most part, and every. single. POSIX. API. is done in bytes. Not Unicode. Bytes. Languages like Python 3 that try to be so Unicode-p

The biggest problem on some of these is the lack of TRIM support in the hardware and/or operating system. After the device has written its complete 32 GB or whatever, it drops into slow mode on the storage Flash. There are ways to get

There are dangerous things that you can allow Docker to do. But if you don't do those things, it is pretty difficult to break out of a container. Redhat has been especially good here, with not allowing anyone but host-root to connect t

I don't understand why Microsoft went to so much effort to use two instructions to load a 32 bit value instead of placing it in RAM and loading it. Was the RAM load so much of a delay in the pipeline that this hack was worthwhile?

I like my Ryzen 1700X which I use as a home server. But after overclocking my 5960x runs most software faster. The Ryzen CPUs seem to have some kind of hard speed limit right around 4 GHz. My 5960x can go to 4.3 although I keep it at 4.1 no

Anywhere with a lot of Gigabit Fiber installed, the congestion is _not_ at the edges. It's further in. If all of those installed Gigabit edges simultaneously used 1 Gbps download, it wouldn't happen. They'd get much less.
