Well-written. Monolithic and opinionated, in software libraries and frameworks, will always contrast with lite an modular. Some monoliths end up long-lasting (Rails?), some perish – as always, fitting the needs of your target audience is ke

Oh god. Time is a flat circle, 90s are having a comeback, now this, tomorrow under construction gifs and faux 3D buttons in framesets. The cringiest part is I do believe their usecase (huge annoying CLICK cursors over “buy now” buttons) jus

This can certainly be boiled to “when engineering a product, be thoughtful of how it can be (ab)used – if it can be, it will be”. Which is obviously a great advice from any perspective.

I can agree, and I can disagree. I definitely wouldn't compare software engineering to medicine; rather, I see a more apt analogy in, actually, _engineering_ – whereas designing a firearm is just as noble and ethical Software is eating

Obviously more of an art project than anything else, but a brilliant direction to focus our thinking on. Insect protein really is a good direction to grow our meat consumption in, and if at first “toy” projects like this mostly provoke disg

Half software development / half data science. Clojure, Ruby + beginner Golang for softdev, R, Weka, Mathematica, Ruby and a bit of Python for data science. On the web side, I'm almost purely backend developer.

Misleading headline. This is a complete -solution- for a limited poker version. Really strong, but stochastic, Hold'em algorithms have existed for a long time.

Thanks for the experience. I thought about that but wasn't sure it is a productive effort. A successful anecdote is extremely helpful.

I do have savings, I'm not in a burning position. I did get a job, but it's not in softdev; I'd prefer working in engineering. I don't exactly _have_ to avoid my old network, but I wouldn't to explain them what kind

In the end, management is just like engineering – getting the outcome you need despite all the constraints. Negative personality traits of the team is a constraint just like anything else – a smart leader will be able to foster thinkers int

Nothing particularly special, every travel startup has some internal DB/toolset to (re)create proper geoschema. Front-end tooling is pretty nice, though; I believe content editors' productivity using AT-AT is much higher than usin

A trip down memory lane. Some of the “hot” technologies took off (CPU architectures, genome computations, ray tracing); some lingered on in the same early 2000s state (genetic algorithms, etc). I, for one, am slightly puzzled why genetic al

I love OpenBSD and this is in no way a bash, but… ugh Who were the most productive developers? Top three in terms of lines added: I understand this is just a funny page with some metrics, but seriously calling people who added most L

A solid project with very little visibility – I, for one, heard about it only with this post! Good luck to Luca and the Lotus team in 2015!

What's funny is that MS-DOS is only 4 years older than Windows, initial MS-DOS release being 33 years old whereas Windows is 29 years old. I'm pretty sure that in 2018, there won't be a “Windows Showcase” giving such a rush o
