If FB screws this up there will be a huge backlash for a few weeks, then FB will apologize. FB screws up with some regularity, but they check themselves quickly afterwards.

Normally I'd agree with you. In Facebook's case, I'll make the argument that Facebook's only trying to do a single thing, but that single thing is so ambitious that they're justified in taking this move. The goal of Facebook is to let peopl

The retraction seems to be saying Facebook will make it obvious to new users just how privacy works. I've found that my friends tend to follow those notices, somewhat surprisingly. Facebook will let people know what's going on once it's hap

I've seen a few of the movies on that list. Titanic in particular stands out as a non-action/horror film on the list that was resoundingly mediocre.

Ugh. Not the sort of person I'd expect to suddenly turn around and release a good movie. This story re: the graphics was interesting, though. I might give Avatar a shot.

But Facebook doesn't care, because their brand overrides everything else. Name doesn't matter during a collaboration of this size.

I'm curious what differences there are between the services that would make Facebook pick Ustream over Justin.tv. Was it something in function? Aesthetic? (Ustream's front page admittedly looks a lot sexier.)

Wow, you got downvoted hard. I disagree with you because in this case, it's a matter of semantic structuring. The language should be free to change, but only when it doesn't conflict with how the language functions. In this case, "lot's" wo

If I'm writing a book on a subject, I'm going to write it because I understand it well and think I have something interesting to say. I won't just pick something that I think makes money and then bullshit something into profitability. Come

It’s one thing when you read these books on your own but the thing is - being GRADED on books that scar you for life - at that age - is a lot like a Rorschach test being conducted using human blood to a classroom of fresh faced 12 year old

Perhaps it takes ten years to learn the language of film. In fact, it almost certainly does. But if you're spending ten years developing every product you launch, you're doing it wrong.

If you index all the voices of my neighbors so I can access them at my leisure, and allow me to search for a few million voices at a time, I will pay you as much money as I pay the Twitter founders.

Naked links? There's certainly context. A particular sort of site was asked for; a link was provided, the front page of which said exactly why the link was being offered. If it had been something a bit more informative (if you'd mentioned Y

I know this is news.YC, but if it's a good company can we link to it without the affiliation notice? It's understandable - though irritating - that any company with a "(YC 200X Grad)" label gets all its minutiae voted to the top of the page

FF has lots of problems like this. From the user interface to name of the service itself, everything about the site seems very awkward and not user-friendly. Judging from how many people use it I'm certain some people find it very useful, b

So now "Fan" pages work essentially like Twitter accounts in terms of letting people follow and receive updates. I wonder what they'll do for normal profiles, where you can't look at a person's feed without their accepting. If they figure o

Dropbox is one of those products that's so good it doesn't get nearly enough hype. I can't think of any service I've ever used that was any better or more flexible. It's my all-time favorite app.

The screenshot looked really good. Running live, it's way too cluttered and there's not enough of a relation between relevant pieces of information. I strongly dislike the lefthand column, and the lack of contract with the righthand one.
