I guess what I was trying to say is that it depends on what you mean by luxury. I always viewed luxury as whatever took some annoyance off my mind, so having a phone/mp3 player/camera/clock/gaming combo that syncs quickly is a luxury to me.

I love the email name I got. Any time the words "knobby" and "moat" are what get randomly generated I snort like a drunk frat boy.

But our vision is quite a bit more than just that feature. So is Facebook's. ;-)

That's because video game consoles are more popular, and they've become more accepted by the media. 30 years ago, my father and his brothers played Atari. I grew up with parents that both understood video games, at least somewhat. There's n

Wow, Gaius, somebody's downvoting every one of your posts. There's a big movement towards emulators among the gamer scene I'm able to observe, because a lot of gamers are realizing that games haven't become fundamentally better in the last

This is an argument that has quite a bit of nuance to it. I'd argue that the iPhone is a luxury item for certain definitions of luxury, that in fact it is more luxurious than something like a diamond necklace if you use a utilitarian defini

How is it zero sum? I'd make you a bet that right now, more people are living happily than ever did in the past. The bar constantly rises.

Tech is only different if you play by the game wherein anything that doesn't abuse a computer's stats is not worth toying with. I'm guilty of playing this game along with everybody else, but at some point we'll realize that we don't need al

FSJ at his best is satirical, not joking. He's funny but he makes good points anyway. His little rant paragraphs 2-4 is spot-on.

Neither am I. I wouldn't know where to begin; I don't know even if I've got the strength to go without much of what I use daily.

I would have to try Vista/Windows 7 to weigh in. I don't have pleasant Windows experiences at all, but I can't say right now that they haven't become a lot better.

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting an article on why attempting to maximize followers is doing yourself and your ideas a disservice.

Coming home from college this summer I've realized how many of my friends sell drugs as their summer occupation. Just selling weed earns you twice what you'd make doing long hours for minimum wage, it seems. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't

Good arguments. Upvoted even though I disagree with many of them. I've never once had a problem I couldn't solve by a quick search of Ubuntu's forums/documentation and editing the config files myself. That's a lot harder than what the ave

This is my dream handheld app. I'm finally moving to the city, so wi-fi will be constantly available, and I can't afford the iPhone's network plan. The perverse Apple fan in me, of course, doesn't even care about this upcoming technology as

There're a lot of philosophies that say poor and hungrier is in some ways a happier way to live. Perhaps there's no "wrong" way to live life, and the people who die young and the people who die old are both happy with the choices they made.

This upcoming design really excites me - this and the experimental stuff they've got Aza Raskin doing. I've spent the last two years really being annoyed at Firefox for being a subpar browser beyond plugins/being open source, and I think it

Can you implement a method of scrolling that actually works with a multitouch pad? That is, 2d scrolling that's smooth and lets me scroll pixel-by-pixel rather than in chunks? There is NOTHING worse than a web browser that can't scroll corr

I think that most of the people who truly want fame achieve it. Most people don't. They value other things over just being well-known. Being famous is not particularly difficult to achieve if you crave it. Then again, many people who don't

I blogged. I had a pretty big readership (three hundred or so followers on Tumblr, not sure how many followed on RSS), and I wrote a lot about how I felt and what I was going through. The conversations I had with my readers led to a lot of

If you give somebody drugs that they aren't prescribed to take, the drugs are not legal to have, even if they were purchased in a legal sale.
