A bit ironic that the very thing the web freed itself from already once (walled gardens from the likes of AOL) now comes back again much stronger.

Why the hell should Google Voice support it? It's an SMS successor that gets provided by the carriers and is bound to the phone.

RCS isn't by Google, it's a standard that Apple refuses to support.

Oh there still are good journalists around. People just don't care enough about quality journalism that they'd spend a few bucks on it a month when there's crappy free journalism.

The only thing Unity is ahead in is bloat. I don't know of another engine in which even simple 2D games have laughable loading times and feel sluggish and stuttery. I am glad they're losing market share finally.

I wonder what it will be like in a few years. How much worse can it get? Will the web be a desolate wasteland with a few social media pages people "flee" to, while the more tech savvy will start using alternative platforms again,

Probably still FreeBSD, even though I'd claim NetBSD's documentation is a tad better. (And Ubuntu really does not stand out as beginner-friendly compared to e.g. openSUSE)

I suspect after the ground invasion in Gaza and the attacks at Lebanon, the Israeli public would be even less pleased at a "third front"

They're derivatives with their own kernel each, so in that regard the question does not make much sense. Due to its large amount of binary packages though, I'd say FreeBSD it is out of the big three.

There is an "artist mode" in Emacs that allows you to draw ascii art with your mouse.

I mainly use Chicken Scheme for these projects. It is small, lean, yet has everything I need. On the GUI front things are a bit dire though, but I'm hoping to soon finish some bindings to QML.
