Nitpick - Go is very much an OO language. Almost everything is done using objects. It has a different way of handling inheritance however - it makes a different decision in the "Composition over inheritance" debate. https:/&

The library looks neat but I'm horrified that he says "optimizates"... repeatedly. That is not a word. The word is "optimizes". The English pedant in me is having trouble getting past that.

Yes, it's really an insertion sort where the insert step is done in parallel hardware. That's cool for small N but it's really still an O(N^2) algorithm.

ADS-B signals aren't suitable for satellite communications unfortunately. But you can get one of these satellite trackers for $120 so you'd think they could come up with something for less than $120k. http://findmespot.

The trade-off with templates is much slower compilation times. Often slow C++ compile times can be traced to enthusiastic use of templated types, particularly given that standard types like std::string are often defined as templates themsel

One thing which bugs me about this article is he conflates "complex" with "good". As an electronic designer I spend a huge amount of effort trying to make things as simple as possible. Complexity may be required to meet

Switch mode power supplies are notorious emitters of radio frequency interference. There are regulations they have to pass and passing them is often one of the hardest parts of power supply design.

This was a big issue in the media in Melbourne a while back - media pundits calling for the road to be closed to bikes with lots of invective about how cyclists clearly didn't have the sense to take care of their own lives. I love it w

It's mostly because the Go compiler was developed out of the plan9 compiler code base, which is unrelated to llvm. The other aspect is that the Go compiler is intended to be very fast. That's not an explicit design goal of llvm -

The "base load" argument for nuclear isn't really convincing any more now that Iceland and Costa Rica are already using 100% renewable energy sources and several other countries are approaching it rapidly.

Interesting references thanks yet "official deaths" inherently underestimates the caused by nuclear energy. For instance there are only 28 official deaths for the Chernobyl disaster [1]. The WHO gives the number as "up to 400

I find it hard to understand why there's still support for nuclear power, particularly given its historical context of not being a very successful industry at all. * It's more expensive than the alternatives, including wind and so

Diesels are great for having a wide spread of torque from very low RPM which makes them very tractable for everyday driving. Race cars have different priorities. They need maximum power which generally results in a very peaky engine. They s

Hi, I'm the author of picoc. It's not self-hosting, no. It's meant to be small rather than a feature-complete implementation of C so it's unlikely it will ever be self-hosting.
