It's understandable that many people see the disconnect between fears about strong AI and the much more limited capabilities of AI today, and think that the fears must be overblown. However, this article takes that gut reaction and use

What if you released the script under a permissive license? (Contrary to ericjang's suggestion :) ) Would this eliminate the risk of a lawsuit?

I think you're underrating the difficulty of this kind of improvement. Rockets already have to be extremely well-optimized to reach orbit, so there wouldn't be the kind of low-hanging fruit like removing 300 pounds of insulation w

I count in Gray code using my fingers. It's twice as fast as binary because the LSB switches half as often! I've also found patterns that are even better, but they're harder to learn.

It's possible to do a lot better than TOFU or Keybase. Andres Erbsen and I have been working on dename, a key distribution system based on the anytrust model: as long as at least one of the servers you rely on is good, you're safe

Seems like XOR is better for approximating a random oracle, and appending is (negligibly) better for ensuring collision resistance. People often are not clear about which of these two very different properties they actually want out of a ha

For what it's worth, once you're a customer, future purchases are fulfilled in 1-2 weeks (even if you've e.g. cancelled your subscription).

If anyone's interested in proving distributed algorithms correct, they should check out the Verdi project ( https://github.com/uwplse/verdi ), which has proved Raft correct in Coq. I imagine handling Byzantine fault

The numbers in the article are all wrong. SATA's ceiling is 600 MBps (megabytes per second), not 600 Gpbs (gigabits per second). SAS goes up to 12Gbps, not 12GBps, which is actually the same thing as 1.5GBps. At least the PCIe numbers

It's cool that the .NET version actually JITs specialized serialization and deserialization code at runtime. This is one place where managed languages really shine, because emitting bytecode is easier and more portable than emitting, s

The bathroom server was up until just a few weeks ago. I'll have to ask someone here what happened. (We've had the system for over ten years, I think, so some of the equipment is getting old. )

It's a shame Udacity hasn't worked as well as Thrun hoped. I'm convinced that the failure of existing online courses has been primarily a problem of motivation, rather than an inherent pedagogical problem in online coursework

I'm no graphics expert, but I'm pretty sure premul is not just an optimization technique -- it's a fundamentally different approach at alpha blending, and it makes some new things possible and some behavior more correct. See http://blogs.m

Actually, check this out: http://blog.joa-ebert.com/2011/11/11/project-hiddenwood/ Audiotool has been working on using only HTML5 and JavaScript (although who knows whether they'll ever start using that in their real product).
