That doesn't solve the problem Cushman mentioned (and clarified several times to thinkcomp in this thread): giving up all your credentials including PIN/"password" to the merchant's hardware, and trusting the merchant and its hardware. What

Looks like they've integrated a processor and keypad on the cards. Sounds like the problem you describe could be solved with an upgraded POS terminal, where the PIN is typed on the card, and transmitted thru the terminal[1] to the bank (wit

I'm looking for a cofounder for a new startup. Still in idea phase (which means I'm open to yours as well :)), but I have an idea+prototype for something I'm personally excited about: augmented reality for shopping. I'm usually in the valle

Useful data, thanks! I'm a little disappointed the pie charts don't include 'Other', which would have given a sense of how long the tail is. Regarding the seeming discrepancy in data for Google's share, the reasons are probably: (i) more of

You wouldn't store full copies, you'd stripe it across multiple machines using some type of error correction coding, like Reed-Solomon, which has less than 2x overhead.

It's 1% of all calls: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/iphone... . Am I the only one that thinks that's actually a lot?

"There's a market price for all the different options" The market isn't efficient though, because there isn't enough information (tho your comment and the GP are helping increase that). It may very well be that there are worse deals at some

That's such a cool statement. If I can't be a CEO like that, I hope I have one like that as my boss some day.

I think he means it would be useful when used for a geographically distributed group. You could find the cheapest place for a reunion based on total cost of airfares, and split the cost evenly.

I'm not familiar with the term 'juice' but I think you admitted to what the GP was in spirit complaining about. I recognize there isn't any ill will here, and you're only naturally supporting your friends (of which you have more than most f

Are those all per startup? I assume office space, legal fees and salaries refer to YC and not its startups (e.g. YC's legal fees, not the startups' legal fees). Food would be per startup of course.

This is seriously impressive stuff. It's wonderful to be able to right-click and run 'Inspect Element' on everything. Of course that's not the motivation for doing it (you laid out the real reasons well), but it helps in winning over geeks

It's hard to justify working on just an idea (rather than a startup) full time though. And not working full time undermines your ability to execute on the idea (since you're slower, less committed).

Yes proprietary formats encourage lock-in too and open standard doc formats are better. But the 'export' that you mention requires a document open (or 'import') on the other end. I mostly agree with you on the rest.

I'm not so sure abstracting away document open is a good idea in the long run. You lose the ability to separate your valuable data from the application, and it encourages lock-in within each app. Abstracting away document save is also proba

(Odd, in all the HTML5 video debates on HN, I hadn't heard that argument from Theora supporters before.) Most of the hardware decoders in smartphones are programmable DSPs; e.g. TI's OMAP3 family. But there still are plenty of chips out the

Even if they can, the policy is going to be a strong deterrent from using those tools. One would rather be less efficient than risk getting caught and being rejected (maybe even blacklisted?) from the App Store.

Oh man, just when I was impressed with what they're doing in iPhone OS 4.0, they throw this in. I was hoping to finally develop for the platform thanks to background services, but my moral objection is now at par with my profit motive.

We too have learned the hard way about 5.: customer acquisition is tough. 5.1. We'd read it before but hadn't quite internalized the cardinal rule: Cost of Customer Acquisition < Lifetime Value of customer (CCA < LV). 5.2. It's easy
