The software install on my daily driver dates from 1999 (though the oldest file in /etc is dated 1994) and was originally an old Red Hat release. It runs XFree86-4.x (last rebuilt 2004) which works fine with nvidia-390.132 (no more tha

Pity it's not possible to open-source execution. So many good ideas fail due to poor execution (these days, quite possibly a larger number are killed by birth by bigco's - that's still a 'failure to execute' though,

It's not a bad bet, if you're losing market leadership through poor execution then getting the government to prop you up as a backstop to the bogeyman seems a reasonable tactic.

Reminds me of Sheldrake's theory of morphic resonance. Unlikely (to my way of thinking), but is an amusing alternative explanation of why breakthroughs happen at the same time (it's all those minds resonating through spooky action

How does this play with copyright infringement? If I advertise a job on my own website, and someone copies that verbatim and reposts it, isn't it a clear case of copyright infringement? (or am I missing something....)

I used to do this on Firefox, it's where I learnt the trick (before some sites made it necessary to use Chrome, and before Firefox had containers).

On linux, just create a separate login and use Chrome there. In fact, what I do is create a separate user, start Chrome once, do any configuration I want and then create a tarball of the separate user's home directory. Then to start a

Not my experience at all. Every time I've opened a support ticket, the initial response has been fast and the problem has been resolved quickly (based on the 3 or 4 incidents I've had over around a decade with them).

Quite - it's the simple but effective design that matters (not whatever language it's implemented in). It could be that Lisp because forces one to think more than just hacking out code, the end result is better designed.

Dell 2007's (1600x1200) are in high demand. Only a few weeks back I set a watch on an ebay site selling over 100 of them, I see there's only 2 left new.

I appreciate that Realtek can be an issue, but on a few PCs they works solidly with Alsa so seems unlikely it's the kernel driver (restarting pulseaudio would bring it back, at least for a while). So it seems to me the issues are very

I worked at a place that had 14" HDD's - huge 19" rack mount things, took ages to spin down. Never carried one personally, older personnel advised not trying to turn a corner while carrying one unless fully spun down.
