I'm not sure how long ago you took it, but this book is probably a better introduction than the DCPU-16 since you build the system up from gates until you reach a high level language. http://www1.idc.ac.il/tecs/ It seems like assembly pro

My gut feeling is that Microsoft has turned a blind eye toward piracy by individuals for many years. Almost everyone I know who began doing system administration during the late 90's learned NT4 by pirating it.

It is relevant because of the assertion that it's partially due to 25 year olds and brogrammers. Neither are true. Also it has not been established that changing things would be an improvement.

As far as I can tell, there are no more of these kinds of parties at conferences than there were 10 years ago. Excluding academic conferences, I don't think programmers drink and more or less than other professionals at conferences.

I relearned a lot of forgotten math using Khan Academy last summer when I was preparing to go back to school. I think Salman Khan's style is significantly better than many of the other videos on the internet. Showing concepts in animations

I agree with everything you've said, so I wont repeat it. I want to relay my own anecdote to the OP on top of it. I've been doing professional web application development since 1997, a year after I graduated high school. I'm 34 years old no

I doubt you forgot everything. It's your brain tricking you. You began school with a strong knowledge of the of the things you were aware of. Now you're aware of many more areas so you feel like you learned nothing overall. Imagine a large

This is something I discovered by accident over the last decade. At first I spent most of my income. After normal expenses I would spend what's left over on entertainment and status symbols like newer cars, etc. Eventually I discovered that

Actually, people still say that sociology, and other social "sciences" are not science. You're assuming that the scientific method is science, but its more than that. Many modern fields of endeavor call themselves sciences mostly because of

I agree. The exercises are a bit lacking but the videos are top notch. They are far better than any other instruction I've received. Khan Academy helped me recover from a subpar high school education and gave me the tools to excel in colleg

It's not just auditory noise, visual noise is a problem as well. The trend toward putting programmers in open plan offices has driven me to telecommute. I wish we could go back to the days of the boring cube farm with white noise speakers i

My guess is that some students never really let go of mathematics. Without this step, you cannot even begin to form a mental model of how the machine evaluates an imperative program. Students with no experience programming may be better of

The degree programs for business at most universities are just corporate prep schools. They're not educating you to be an entrepreneur. You'd be much better off in a science or engineering program where people, at least a few of them, are

I'm going to a community college now (at 34) and it seems like the quality of teaching is very good but the grading is too generous. If I had lower ambitions, I could see myself getting by on an hour a week of study for each class while st

This is where research pays off. Community college advisers, at least at my school, are very bad. In Illinois all of the schools have a complete transfer database online at uselect.org.

I'm going to disagree with you there. Occasionally I watch "old media" and for a while Chat Roulette dominated both traditional and comedy news shows as well as late night. Many people on the street know exactly what it is: penises.
