I think some unis require students to start as an MPhil student and then transfer from MPhil to PhD via some kind of publication/presentation?

There seems to be some suggestion that the sweetness triggers digestive system changes that could be harmful: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3772345/ It’s very vague though

For short lived objects, heap allocation is probably about as fast as allocating on the stack. By pooling you can end up moving objects out of the fast eden space into older generations. I worked on optimising a java library a few years b

I rewatched it the other day and it is a great ending. My first thought was that they could have cut to black when Truman walks through the door, but actually having the last line as "what else is on?" is perfect IMHO.

There is a mix of newer and older OLED and LED TVs in there, and that is 6 months, 20 hours a day of watching CNN. That said, it doesn't look quite as good as the last time I checked on the results. The new QD-OLEDs seem to do worse th

I think all Neo-QLED TVs are mini-LED - something like 1000 dimming zones?

Love the jobs asking for 6 years experience. I can just hear the HR team saying "See, we go one higher".

I boulder every week with my 74 year old dad, which I'm really grateful for. I get the feeling we've got another year or so until he has to stop.

I found this a great introduction to 'proper' mathematics. It gave me enough context to be able to read more mathematics without feeling so lost. It also showed me just how bad the mathematics part of my (non-computing) engineerin

There are theoretical maximum efficiencies for thermodynamic cycles in combustion engines. I believe the limit in the diesel cycle is around 40%. Petrol engines are lower still.

I love these HN Wikipedia links and the rabbit hole of open tabs they always send me down. TIL that rod cells in the eye stop sending a signal in response to light.

PCWs were pretty decent word processing machines in their time, IMHO. We had an 8256 and a 9512 when I was a kid and they were surprisingly nice to use. I still remember the clatter of the daisywheel printer fondly.

Yes, I ended up with a Coupe instead of an Amiga as my parents knew nothing about computers and figured it would be a good follow on from my +2. It was a clever machine in some ways, but from the launch it was clearly doomed.

That does depend on how the abstraction is defined, of course. I once worked on optimising a 2D Canvas C++ class which had a nice top level virtual interface so you could replace it with a different implementation. It was also crazily slow

Overwatch 2 (for me, at least) seems to be achieving a 50% win rate by alternating between matches where my team wins with no effort and matches where my team can't even get out the spawn room.

The purpose of the air force is to stop the war becoming 12 months of intense ground fighting, isn't it? What would the early days of the war in Ukraine have looked like if Russia had access to a USAF-level strike capability?

Surely there's a startup somewhere working on ceiling mounted AI targeted infrared radiant heaters? It could work like those pixel LED headlights on cars to accommodate different body shapes.

You can solve the integer case via branch and bound: solving the relaxed linear problem and then in a tree search constraining integer variables to be 0/1. Potentially they're doing something equivalent to that?

Cash comes with its own costs of course: from a quick google a shop paying cash into a business account pays 0.5-1% in fees. Plus issues with theft etc.
