Anyone (author) know what was used to generate the cover image of cubes and shadows? Edit: it's sketchup - there's a .skp file in the data/ subdirectory of the github repo for the book.

Hmmm. I'm more usually aware of helpful, insightful, useful articles on how to improve performance, and a constant stream of optimizations to web technology to the same end. Not that the site in question isn't bloated brochure-war

That's a pity: the lecture videos were worthwhile, and I got all the unit tests by dissecting the auto-checking scripts that the class supplied :-/

I highly recommend the Coursera compilers class: you don't have to work though it in synch with a class; just sign up and work at your own pace. If you have to watch the same video two or three times, you can. None of this stuff actual

Sounds cool. One annoying bit of breathless (and brainless) enthusiasm stuck out though: "In fact, diamond is the hardest substance known to man, there is literally nothing we could use that could offer more protection." While dia

Many languages with "BDFL"s have many contributors to core functionality. Elm does not seem to. For open source projects, that's pretty much a death sentence: although I appreciate Evan going off and solving hard problems wit

I spent five years on the YouTube anti-abuse team. You should also apply there. And where I am now, Square. And Stripe, and Facebook… there are lots of good anti-abuse teams in the industry.

I'm assuming someone will try to drive close-enough NTSC/PAL signals from the analog outputs, and create (a) demoscene demos and (b) Doom. Any links to such hijinks yet?

With Firebase expanding to form an entire ecosystem of services, and being kept alive for a long time now, I have renewed hope that being acquihired by Google won't just be the death knell - at least for this type of service.

I worked at Google (YouTube) during the Snowden revelations. I never got the impression that Google "hated" him. In fact, that statement doesn't even make sense: Google is tens of thousands of individuals. Of course, some con

I like Julia's posts enough to subscribe to her blog. Her posts on Hacker News also routinely generate extremely interesting, technical discussions. I enjoy both. Also, I don't know Julia except through her blog and twitter.

Your 10x speed, 90% functionality caution is definitely warranted. I've lost count of how many times I've seen "we run Python/Ruby/Perl/whatever" 3x faster, just haven't implemented exceptions and mon
