I think different folks have different learning styles. For me books don't really help. I learn programming by programming. Often a well written blog post that I find on HN, or a tutorial that I find from google teaches me something I didn'

Epidemics are noisy... This graph doesn't reflect that. Consider this. A ton of people get polio. Then we have herd immunity for 25 years until the percentage of the population that hasn't been exposed rises. Then we have a huge epidemic ag

Its basically just standard tree-based GP. There's no metaGP in this yet, but its a cool idea. I think the answer to your first questions is that it depends on the problem and the search space.

Each hackathon is different. Often there are industry experts, etc. Its probably better if you have a partner who can code going into it, but at the Hacking Medicine event there was a pitch time where people could share ideas and try to get

You could consider going to a hackathon... Its a good way to meet people, kick your idea around. There are sometimes health based hackathons. I don't know where you are based, but every fall there is a Hacking Medicine event at MIT.

Right... I agree that psych problems could be based in genetics, its just not my field. But these things can also be environmental, developmental, epigenetic. They can also be mixtures of all of them. I was just saying that we're probably n

Talk this over with a molecular biologist. Its never gonna happen. Some pathologies are (or have components that are) hereditary. Of those things, a handful are specific gene mutations or groups of mutations. These mental illnesses are so p

can't do any excel type formulas or functions... that's a limitation... very cool that you can copy and paste though. I've often wanted a way for users to copy excel data into an app as opposed to making them inport a csv...

In my experience, communication is the lion's share of the work in a programming project. Unless the task is super self contained, I can't see this being useful. I suppose I could say, "I need a jquery plugin to do this" or I need a thingy

Something pretty different. We've got a few ideas/prototypes kicking around. We've noticed that all the q/a sites (even those for chemistry) suck. There's no way to draw structures, propose mechanisms. In fact, I've never seen a good way to
