> I always interpret "idiomatic" as "avoiding performance issues". Huh? That is definitely not what it means. That may be a byproduct if the language implementers then make the social mores they admire the ones that perform the best, bu

You are reading into what I said. Nowhere in it do I say design is easy. It's on a site where I say programming is hard, so why would I claim design is easy? Hell, I can barely barely do a passable design so why on earth would I claim

You know, you HN guys are super buzzword and design blind. This company slaps "bcrypt", "SSL", and "open source" on a decently designed bootstrap page and the response is "this will totally work!" Sad. For example, this statement "Credenti

This is kind of cool. I was actually talking to her about it after this event: https://twitter.com/chriszf/status/226074915940491264 I didn't realize she was actually implementing a feature. She was talking about it as if it was a proto

Just wanted to say, my book is specifically the antithesis of "Learn X in 10 Days", which is why they have the title they do. I push people to work hard, take their time, and build skill gradually. That's why what I'm doing works for begi

Actually, either you do know how to do it or you don't. After that there's degrees of capability, but before learning to write software in any language there's a period of "duhhhh i don't get it" and at a certain point people get a "oh! i

Most math books suck. The one exception, and the first book that made me realize you can teach complex topics to regular folks, is Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson and Martin Gardner. It's been around since the late 1800's and

I do all of this with just vim and some tools, and I do it with any language, any text, anywhere on any machine in and OS without having to buy anything from anyone and I can change how all of it works any time.

Your argument does not follow and is an illogical extension. I simply prove that it has a while-loop that won't terminate and use permutations to prove that. The logic proof is valid because I found an instance of the input that would cau

IDEs are bad for you. It's much better to simply use a real programmer's editor that you can craft into being what you need. In fact, I can usually take vim plus cscope, exuberant ctags, and ack and demolish any code base you throw at me.

I am a very experienced C programmer, and I have full comments on any page. You find an error, drop a comment and I'll fix it immediately. Chances are though, you're someone who read the K&R chapter, then went through nitpicking minor

No, I'm fully blocking and moderating comments. They are for serious students who need help, not drive-by netizens. In the past I had them open, but after the first two hits by HN or reddit I had to lock it down so that students wouldn't

No, it doesn't. Go find middle C. See how on the piano it's in the middle of the piano, and also in the middle of the grand staff? Now, find one of the many on the guitar. Not really in the "middle" are they? Even the left and right ha

I'm ditching ePub. It's a crap format that has a bewildering number of options and it seems every viewer wants to implement some different subset of them. From now on, it's PDF and HTML only.

Just a warning to everyone, like the book this course is in development as I write the book. It's covering a lot of the chapters, but I have to go back and clean up some videos and do the final ones. That's why the price is low for now.

Man, I used to use fish. It was great. It was like all the things people eventually make zsh do but in one convenient binary. I think my favorite feature was that history was instantly shared among all your open fish instances.

Look at brubeck (mentioned here). It doesn't support the different state management styles since Python's coroutines are broken, but it does most of it.

Scaling isn't so much the problem, since you can do various things to keep users on specific servers. In my setup, I also solve a lot of the state issues since there isn't a single state for the entire app, but instead for each process tha
