Exactly. I taught programming, not dogma. Frankly, if I can teach two paradigms, and one is easy to explain while the other is hard, well I'm going to teach the easy one to explain. Functional programming is just hard to explain to people

Read that out loud and tell me that doesn't grate on your ears? That's my basic test if code for the book would be understood by the reader. What you have here, this "symbol soup" is what makes programming hard for people in the beginning

You are not mistaken, there is no chapter on functional programming. Why? Because "The Little Schemer" is a way better book for teaching better functional programming than I could possibly do in a Python book. Python's functional concept

Don't copy, imitate. The book was very easy to write. Just lay out 52 exercises, 26 for super basic stuff, 26 for progressively more advanced stuff. Take about an hour or two every night and write a couple. Pretty simple really. You ma

I am, but to be honest, I got more done when I had a job. See all those sites? I did all of those, wrote for them, worked on LPTHW, wrote mulletdb.com, hacked on lamson, a few other projects, and still played guitar about 4 hours a day. No

I keep meaning to write some kind of blog about this, but I call it "time opportunism" as opposed to "time management". That's the best name I could come up with for this thing I do that keeps me creative and flexible yet still getting thi

I've also brought up a counter question that people seem to not be able to answer: How do you get a bad Debian Developer fired? It seems once they get in they're in for life. Yet, some of the worst DDs who crap on programmers seem to some

Actually, I really agree with you here. In fact, it got me thinking about sort of a protection clause in licenses along these lines. Where you can say, "This software is BSD licensed, providing you follow the guidelines in the PACKAGING

An apology to who? I spoke my mind and made what I thought were valid points and I still stand by them. Debian is abusive to developers who create the software they need. It's only a matter of time before the programmers making their supp

I didn't write it, Ersek, Laszlo did. That's how sheddingbikes works. Rather than comments, people can send responses as a post and if it's good I post it. Sadly, it's not frequently that people send in a good response.

I don't know what book you read but the title alone, "The Inmates Are Running The Asylum" is offensive since it implies I'm the inmate. But take this quote just from the product description at Amazon: "The Inmates are Running the Asylu

Well damn, maybe I'll do one. Hell I'd get together with people in SF or wherever for free and show them how to do stuff. It'd be an awesome bad ass way for me to get feedback on what needs to happen to make Mongrel2 awesome.

It's trouble enough to drive people away from Mongrel2. Also, I find it weird that you take me saying "we ditched python in mongrel2 because of Linux" to mean "Python SUCKS! Stop using it." Never said the latter, only the former.

No, most of that is generated from the .rl files or just SQL that's common to everything. Also, you'll want to throw in all of Storm and PyREPL if you want a real comparison. Then again, 4600 lines of anything is tiny. You have a massiv

Actually, it's not that Python doesn't work the way I expect, it's that distros have killed Python's portability promise and made C more attractive. Granted I'm able to code C well enough to pull this off, but having to do this is annoying

I'd say a good start would be: 1. Less syntax, so that later language features don't cause upgrade problems and can more easily be worked around rather than causing syntax errors. 2. Awesome package management with everything not core in pa
