People do consider other people's reactions. Since people riding a Segway are seen as "uncool", many people won't even consider buying one. They don't get to the point where they're looking at pros and cons; buying one isn't even a consider

High end watches don't keep very good time because they're not electronic watches -- they have mechanical movements.

I don't have a startup, but it seems to me that this article misses a large part of why YC is so successful -- YC companies get great advice. Generally, if a group of people is simply cloning another, they're going to be also-rans; if they

Especially so emphatically -- "Was the moonwalk faked? No!" Usually, you'd see just "Was the moonwalk faked?", and no actual decision to the verity of the moonwalk. This was very nice to see.

Am I the only one that's really confused by the beginning, where it's just an exclamation point in a triangle, and some dimly-lit wires/pipes? Previously, I got to where the triangle was replaced by a few numbers, but got stuck there. I ref

I think there's another problem -- ease of driving. When driving a car, you don't have to make many choices. Any directional choice is binary: do I turn right here or not? As long as you stay on a road, the choices are limited for you. Driv

Wow, alice.com is somewhat annoying. They front-load the annoying, frustrating part of the process -- filling out who your family consists of, telling them what you buy, and actually registering for the site. This is all before you can see

You're using the reddit.com subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/ , which can be subscribed, unsubscribed, and moderated, just like any other subreddit.

It always is nice when a professor takes the time to put together a course packet, but sometimes it can be frustrating when you don't understand something in class, and go to the course packet to find it explained the same way.

I looked over Sterling's other posts before submitting a "this guy's stealing from pg" post, and came to a similar conclusion. I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that I don't like it, but it wasn't worth raising the alarm over.

That was one of the reasons I posted this link -- it adds nothing of value to pg's essay, and quotes a whole lot of it; I think bordering on plagarism.

Does it actually bring up any points? The only added text I saw were three jokes that didn't add anything to the essay.

Can you actually register under a fake name now, or just have a different one publicly viewable? Back in 2006, I got kicked off of Facebook for registering as the pseudonym I used on the internet. It wasn't anyone else's name, but there'd b

This is interesting, but obviously doesn't take into account people that were going to buy from Dell anyway. So the value-add for Twitter here is less than $3 million. I wonder if there's a way to figure out what it actually is.

I think the first comment on the article has a decent explanation: "How about differences in price elasticity? We know that demand for big ticket items are very price-elastic, so they price those items very competitively. But, given that yo

There'd be no point to it, at least for this kind of breaking out of normal behavior. By "point", I mean the kinds of things I've done at IE events are not the kinds of things that would be enjoyable to do alone. Compare it to going to a pr

I've been to several of Improv Everywhere's events. They're always amusing. Half of the fun is doing something you know is unusual, and will have a cool effect when you look at the video later. It's an odd feeling to break out of normal beh

pg is designing the language right now. It's not being polished; being readied to build twitter on top of. The important thing right now is the actual design of the language, not all the random helper functions. They can easily be added i

I have a problem with this way of thinking about NP. Just because it's "harder" to find an answer doesn't mean it can't be in P. Maybe it's just n^127 to find the answer, but n^2 to verify. I don't think it's so obvious that P!=NP as you

Facebook was incredibly popular, and had a lot of buzz even when you could only register if you had an email at a college they'd added by hand. So Facebook isn't popular just because everyone's on there. Of course, that helps. One could arg

Google's reliance on data for everything sounds like they should watch out for overfitting (as in machine learning). Presumably, they're doing so, but it's an interesting thought.

Well, it's different information. It is nice to know what it's about, but I'd rather read a random news.ycombinator link than a random article titled "Do Tiny URLs Suck".
