Much depends on where exactly you are and who you pay for electricity and when. For me, under PG&E pricing, the running cost for heat pump heating ends up higher than with gas. And the equipment cost is much higher. I'll end up get

Sadness. I use Google Chat at work and I absolutely hate threads there. Maybe the Discord implementation is better, but I'm not holding my breath.

That's an unrealistically pessimistic assumption though. Many laptops are off, not failing to sleep. The great majority of people aren't buying these niche devices. And the source should be cleaned up since that is a vastly bigger

I don't need to illuminate the whole space all night to see where I'm going. I carry a flashlight on night walks. It light pollutes only the area right in front of me.

I generally followed this guide, despite working from another distro: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF The biggest pain every time I've done this is making sure that I can bind the device

Given that I live in an area that's dark, I walk alone in the dark all the time . I'm just one of the lucky minority of people that manages to escape being ruled by unsubstantiated or irrational fear.

Address the dirtiest sources and the largest sinks, not the symbolic tiny sinks. Your laptop using 6 watts of idle power is not going to make a meaningful difference.

And it doesn't even have to be that way! We have the power to choose something different. I've seen nice indirect lighting fixtures that aren't nearly as harsh, or lights that are warmer. They're just not the norm. Or fr

Except they have regulated profit margins - it's cost-plus. So they have an incentive to make everything as expensive as possible to maximize their take. And the CPUC rubber stamps everything the utilities ask for. CA has some of the m

Unlikely. Everything about Bay Area governance is aligned to make doing projects of any type as slow, expensive, and as difficult as possible.

You can also pass through more than just a GPU. I pass through an NVMe disk and a USB controller, effectively giving me a full second computer within my workstation. It's honestly fantastic.

I have a symmetric 10 gbps connection at home. I have an EPYC machine that plays host to a number of virtual machine guests for various tasks. One of them is running opnsense to be my router. It's not fast enough to route at line speed

Usually not, and certainly not as currently designed. Hence the notion of flipping to a mirrored side in case of excess electricity, or having some fancy coating stack that manages to reflect everything which is not absorbed by the cell.

I could imagine something a bit better controlled could be ok. Large areas of solar panels, engineered to reflect as much as they can't use, would be a good double benefit. Excess electricity could be opportunistically used for GHG cap

In a lot of cases new software isn't delivering utility over old software, yet consumes more resources. Users justifiably feel miffed that they're expected to buy new hardware merely to keep up.

I'm not aware of any, which is a shame. I want to replace one of my two cars with an EV sometime late 2022 or early 2023. Unfortunately they all come with touchscreens and cellular connectivity. I want neither. My 2002 Saturn LW200 had
