Which is annoying me right now as I remodel my home, because I would prefer my bedroom be a windowless cave. I would have two egresses without the window. Why must I have a third?

Actual research suggests the effect is tiny. "At the median owner-occupancy rate zip code, we find that a 1% increase in Airbnb listings leads to a 0.018% increase in rents and a 0.026% increase in house prices." https:/

It's not a zero-sum game. You can have both, but you need to build enough to have it. Regulating the use of a thing is a mark of market failure. How would you feel if the government told you that you could only use a pencil for writing

Maybe so, but can you show any data that it's a significant or meaningful problem and not a visible scapegoat? The data I found (above) makes clear that deleting the short-term rental market would not even dent the housing shortage pro

The United States is short O(10M) housing units[0], primarily due to anti-construction policies. Airbnb has O(100k) listings[1] in the US. Banning short-term rentals is a 1% solution. That's a policy distraction, not a useful lever to

It's creating liquidity, just not the kind you value. It's liquidity of short term housing rather than long term housing.

That last point - that housing is too expensive - is not something that airbnb causes or can fix. That's a supply side problem and the solution is housing construction. It may marginally exacerbate the symptom by providing liquidity.

I'm 6'3" and would love to be shorter. I think the ideal height is "just barely tall enough to reach the top cabinet in the kitchen". 5'10" is probably what I'd choose?

Having more than one copy of a device is quite common. Think USB to serial adapters or test equipment or license tokens.

I don't understand the hate towards market rate housing. Want the market price to come down? Build more supply. We're so far short of healthy levels of stock, however, that there's no relief in sight with merely-modest pro-ho

Look at the tabs in the spreadsheet, you don't want the first one. The land cost scales down with density. The unit permitting cost is fixed regardless of size.

I'm in 94022 (served by PG&E) and in July 2022 there was a 13% chance I would lose power on any given day. I had more than 40 total hours of down time that month.

The laws being passed aren't enough. They have a bunch of caveats (SB-9, for example, has a long list of disqualifiers) that limit the utility of any particular bill and making actually using it difficult. The builder's remedy has

Such measures will improve some stock and eliminate some stock, but won't produce new stock. So they drive up housing prices.

It's the same thing as replacing "homeless" with "experiencing homelessness". It's not saying anything different, but communication efficacy isn't the point.

I didn't follow the car replacement schedule line. Why would a suburbanite replace cars every three years vs six for a block dweller? Both of those seem extremely short to me.
