Go's epoll abstraction is baked into the runtime. They are called goroutines. Goroutines blocked of FD's automatically use epoll and schedule based on its results: https://github.com/golang/go/blob/m

We have a workaround in place for 26492 (a program that just queries all containers, and there VETH info and checks if they are in the bridge, force adding them if they are not) luckily so we don't have to build custom versions of Syst

To echo this we have run 10k+ containers in production for close to a year, and docker crashes all the time. Sometimes in ways undetectable by any reasonable health polling mechanism messing up Kube as well. Edit: Relevant details https:&#

A trie is O(k), where k is the length of the key on inserts and deletes. Generally, any hashing algorithm is also O(k) with the additional overhead of the lookup in the table. This also ignores that most hashes have only amortized O(1) inse

Trie's are my favorite data structure. The implementation in the Linux kernel is a lock free RCU structure ( http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/lib/radix-tree.c ). It is used for the page cache among other th

Well, no Twitch isn't the largest. NBC/Comcast moved several orders of magnitude more of live video for the last olympics, and those numbers went up substantially this year+. Live presents interesting challenges yes, but in some w

I believe _truly_ complex systems will mimic the organic ones which are so successful. They will be chaotic with systems that have an emergent property of order. These systems will _gain_ from chaotic input rather than fail. For More: http

Yep^^ In addition there is a major encoding downside to this. If your encoder can grab a whole 2-10s chunk of video it can produce a better quality stream. This is actually _super_ important for producing good video quality (especially on t

We (Comcast/NBC) run 2s segments for our video streaming service which is... substantially larger than this. High latency mobile networks on clients which don't do keep alive can be _somewhat_ problematic. The best fix for that is

A 2Mbps profile (what they mentioned) is about 900Megabytes/hour. They use ABR (hls) so, most likely there _average_ bitrate is actually only 1.5Mbps. That means about 675 MB per hour. Which means about 600k hours where consumed by thi

TL;DR: The delay is normally a segment length. Somewhere between 2-16s depending on there configs. Because the system is realtime (live) it _must_ not fall behind live. These systems therefore are always only a single segment behind live.

Garbage collection is an idea. It can be slower, or faster, than other memory management techniques depending on implementation and specific usage. Functional programming languages do not _require_ a GC. They just largely have it. "Fib

Research on the subject says this is more dangerous for the cops then the calmer approaches. The irony is cops do this to protect themselves, and statistically speaking it has the exact opposite effect.

The biggest reason is super simple. Emacs works in terminal mode (really well) and can be <insert pkg manager here> installed pretty much everywhere. If you are ever in a situation where you are working on a remote system over SSH (po
