If we've learned one thing about education over the years it's that past a certain point more funding doesn't help. Improving educational outcomes requires at least 2 things that the article mentions: 1. Engaged parents. 2. S

The async function also can't await outside of an async runtime. Which means I cant just call it and expect it to work. I need to wrap the call in an executor of some sort. If the async function doesn't do any awaiting itself

That isn't quite true. An async signature forces it's caller to be async as well. This is because of it's semantics. Most signatures don't infect their callers signatures like that. async is qualitatively different in th

There are multiple non security reasons to want deterministic and reproducible runtime environments. 1. Everything you need to describe and build a project is obtained by checking it out. 2. No more, works on my machine but not yours proble

I think the more accurate way to interpret that proverb is: The pursuit of power corrupts. It's a warning that if your goal is having power and nothing else then you are susceptible to corruption. It's also a warning that having p

I would argue that when you are at the point of testing that the actual api works as you expect what you need is an integration test not a unit test. And you shouldn't mock it because if you mock it you won't actually be testing

If it's a battle by all means avoid it. But it's weird that your ops team would care about the image type. The whole point of containers is that they don't need to care.

Yep, And I'm sure there are some instances that do exactly that. But in a distributed protocol you only get the benefit if both sides of a given interaction support the optimization. For something in the spec that is optional you can&#

I should note that as a protocol I suspect that ATProto is less chatty which does translate to reduced costs. It adds features on top that some may or may not want which increase costs in other ways but only for the people who want to utili

I wholeheartedly agree. From a purely technical analysis ATProto looks better as a protocol to me. But I don't use Bluesky I use ActivityPub because the people I want to be connected to are there and not on Bluesky. I do think you coul

One example of the chattiness is a flow where more than one person is following the same individual on another server. That person will have to push new messages to every single one of the people following them. This means that if 10 users
