Couldn't think of a decent example off the top of my head. Also, proper term is 'undocumented opcodes' for further searching. Try "AXS * (SAX) AXS ANDs the contents of the A and X registers (without changing the contents of either

The 6510 (C64 6502 with extra ports) has secret opcodes, basically holes in the circuitry, which emulators have to support because they're used in demos for extra speed (eg, write to x what's in a). I wonder if this simulation also has secr

I'm using openSuse 10.1. I got 11.3 but it was awful. I don't know how they messed up. I went back to 10.1. Either way, Ubuntu didn't find my video card. but Suse did (it's a 1920x1200 Dell laptop). I don't know why Ubuntu didn't. Suse is e

Not quite on topic, but as for PC speaker tricks: I once found if you control the tape-interface relay switch on a BBC B (or BBC Electron), from a BASIC loop, you can make it click really fast and make silly noises! Doesn't work in an emula

Ted Nelson said the world of computing would be different if AT&T hadn't charged $50,000 for a Unix license (yes, that's per machine!).

Some Bladerunner DVD collections have the 3:53 hour long documentary "Dark Days", which is excellent and goes into Trumbull's work in great detail.

I wrote a Windows application which reads in all your email files and creates an SQL database/index, along with a Lucene index for searching the email body. You can do an SQL wildcard search like SELECT * from mymail where SUBJECT like "%Gm

Typically (say on Ebay), gold coins sell (eg, are bid up to) for the same amount as that weight in gold on the global market.

But the reporter gave no weight to his statement. "Arran has said he would like to solve" doesn't imply anything other than that's what he said.

A Windows 98 PC for sample transfer to an old Akai S950 (software doesn't work in Windows XP), and the same machine to run a HardSID ISA card (ISA is a pre-PCI PC device bus).

I'd much rather search/replace a huge string in Perl than in C++. Perl's hugely optimised.

I learned Prolog having signed up for an AI minor at University. It takes a bit of learning, but you quickly get used to it, with the right tutor and sample problems to solve. Basically, my Prolog code worked out a route through a London Tu

In this town in the UK, all the 2nd-hand bookshops are shutting down one by one due to Amazon's 'used book' sales. It's hard to sell a book for £3.50 when you can buy it from Amazon for 1 penny plus £2.75 postage.
