Just an amusing note - I used to call 3.5 inch disks 'hard disks' because unlike 5.25 inch disks, the shell around the disk is hard!

Just the light touch of Marissa Mayer and her "Studies prove people prefer bigger fonts" ickery.

Yes, but what happens when the latest 'remix your artist blah' (Macromedia Flash programmes written originally by Koan/Brian Eno and Coldcut), gets tired, and they have to think up something else? Shouldn't the music stand on its own merit?

I don't get the comment feeling sorry for the technicians at this machine's shortcomings. It's good that Intel etc didn't help this power hungry superpower to take over the world as they wanted to.

My guess is it's RunStop/Restore key combination resetting back to the BASIC prompt.

I use online dictionaries when reading Jack Vance books. I don't think they are obsolete at all - printed ones are.

Just a note - Mark (a Ted Nelson collaborator) now works for Google.

My collaborator Ted Nelson (of Xanadu fame) has been carrying a camcorder to record (on hundreds of tapes) just about every conversation with people he's met, for about 30 years. Pretty ahead of his time, I guess. I'm on some of his tapes t

The dollar value of a rental is, for Lovefilm UK, about 90 cents. Because of this low price, ripping a DVD is MUCH more effort than simply renting it again.

If your application requires 3GHZ of CPU, and 256MB of RAM, it simply won't be economical to host it on the web. The argument that using 3GHZ is too much? Then why do Intel sell 3GHZ chips...

Not sure what the point of this article is. For Intel history, read Inside Intel and the "Only the Paranoid Survive" - the Grove book hinted at but not mentioned outright. Can't see anything new here.

I had to write Prolog code at University to traverse one of these. Pretty interesting!

Well when I was at Uni in 2005, Trevor (the inventor) came to give a talk. A professional swimmer, he made his money from water tricks in a circus (eg, like Houdini) and bought a house, and lived in it for plenty years, and invented his r

I was just making a satirical joke. I know how he was treated by the government, and I'm sorry if I caused offense. What annoys me is what he could have accomplished in the field of robotics if he hadn't been wrongly treated.

I've seen helicopters in films with shadows (due to the helicopter with the camera inside). But yes, that's not at 35k feet, but more like 200 feet.

Bah, it's got that thing where I click a link and it picks a link further up the page. Also, it uses 40% more memory than before and I can't be bothered putting back v9.64. Darn!

I've worked with Ted and it's a myth that he makes vapour ware. For instance, Gzz is a fully-working program. Also, I have a 1989 article from Language Technology (Louis Rossetto's first magazine before Wired), and it's a breezy interview w

Pretty amazing. I was doing something vaguely similiar in 2000 or so, to find C64/SID tunes, but nothing as advanced as this. Sadly, the demo doesn't go into the 'Sound' menu option.

It's all to do with the res. Any video can be downsampled to 300x300, for instance, but computer images need to fit the projector's resolution. My projector (Epson EMP TW20) is about 800x600 and so in 1400x1050 (which it automatically downs

Typical of someone to glibly say 'where's regex matching?' when it's very advanced, and it's possible Google simply don't have the cpu for making (and searching) a search tree for many megabytes of mail. I don't know how Yahoo do it, but
