I tried to use Emacs under Windows, but it just took forever to render a simple window of text! This can't be normal, I can't figure out how a lengthy REPL session can fail to scroll faster than molasses.

I once found out on a BBC Master (which we borrowed from school) you can control the relay that controls the tape interface. A relay clicks on or off. So we had a BASIC program which clicked it at random, and it made a lovely clattering noi

Some day someone will write a tool which can determine an application (eg, on Windows) is destructive, by recursing into its code and finding all file accesses. You could easily monitor ever application running and make sure it doesn't, eg,

My Mum wanted to copy music onto her multi-gigabyte Sony Walkman mp3 player. I simply showed her every single step to get the job done, and she wrote it all down, and all she has to do now is consult her notes. This is a Windows machine - I

Met him at a local music festival in 2001. I gave him a CD of my music and he apologetically said "I might not be able to do anything with it". Nice guy! [Edit] I didn't hear back from him but that's what he said might happen.

I think it was controversial on the comp.lang.lisp newsgroup, with threads saying "It may be Reddit-ish but it lacks most of the features like a proper data store". [Edit] Of course, I was reading that newsgroup at the time, so this isn't a

The wierd thing about Acorn Risc Machines is that IBM invented the RISC architecture, and some Brits made it a product (200MHZ StrongARM). So the PowerPC is competing with the ARM, when the ARM came later! Pretty amazing story behind that c
