As the years pass, I keep thinking back and realize that Richard Stallman was right all along: > For personal reasons, I do not browse the web from my computer. (I also have not net connection much of the time.) To look at page I send

I think Rust is actually pretty good at this. If you do have to do a change that will affect your entire code base (or at least will be pervasive), the compiler will be able to tell you where things are wrong with a good degree of precision

Generally for side projects I start with a simple PoC and then iterate into a better fit for the projects needs. Most projects start out with the following PoC stack. PoC: Python + file system as a database If I actually use it a lot or per

I completely agree with you but it's surprising that the biggest factors aren't being brought up. Most people won't pay for a ton of small services since it adds up. There is a minimal threshold to pass to make online transac

Optional forests of hierarchy trees are where it's at. Essentially don't encode everything into one gigantic one. Sometimes you know that users are going to tag `laptop` a bunch and want that to also drag in `personal computer` (b

To give some perspective, Microsoft is doing better with VS Code than Mozilla is doing with Firefox. * There are no sponsored ads every time I use common functionality (like opening a new tab) * At least VS Code has a easily available setti

It's sufficient to identify you since there is still all other tracking data any browser supplies as part of the HTTPs connection handshake [1]. It's also not necessary to have Mozilla be the bad actor. Anyone who has access to th

AFAIK, streams are treated as any Redis data type and stored on disk making them durable. Redis even allows you to use an append only file and the database snapshot for persistence/durability with differing levels of requirements (eg.

Dealerships are orthogonal to local showrooms. Imagine manufacturers buying out the dealership lots, turning a good portion of the lot to a small track for testing the cars handling, maneuvering, and acceleration without going onto public r

Literally just figured out how to get my browsing history piped into Grafana+Loki so that I have a single source of truth regarding my browsing history using a userscript that ignores CORS and just POSTs to Loki's API. Apparently that&

One thing to take into account is the flexibility of already having a VM over the touted CDN/jamstack workflow. I think of it in terms of marginal cost. What is the cost of spinning up another site in a CDN/jamstack workflow? Not

A-ha! I knew I had one more. How many times have you wanted to dedup a (text) file, but definitely didn't have enough memory to perform the task? I found this one day when I had to dedup a set of .ndjson.gz files which totaled a cumula

I disagree, a bad test can lead to a false sense of security which can translate to more harm than before in cases when the test produces a false negative and the person has lowered their guard due to the presence of a test.

I think that having a formal spec would help since a lot of the minutiae that is done to format and the like can be in the form of snippets in (nearly all) text editors used today. So just having the autocompletion for people editing in tex

Only thing I would think of changing would be allowing for the use of colons in tags to provide tag namespaces. Then it's fairly trivial to implement things like created on date, completion date, and the like since it's just "
