Sure - and from that perspective farming was a probably not a great example. But surely more people could be programmers than currently are. Pushing a car is physically exhausting but doesn't require much training and practice. Programmin

Hah, that's a great quote. :) Pithy and to the point. One some level, we've already reached that point - though we're not programming directly to communicate with McCarthy's servants we are already on that path.

I'm not sure "programming is hard" is the right counterargument - I personally find farming hard, and I'm sure most Westerners do too - but for millennia it's all people did to survive. Also, have you seen what non-programmers can do with E

The Gladwell piece actually does a better job illustrating the point, I think. Gladwell effectively claims that success in life is due in part to finding the right opportunities at the right time, and the networks you get at Harvard and Yal

I wondered about this too. Just for fun, I plotted the household income distribution on the same chart: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/667/income-distribution.jpg Income distribution looks quite different from wealth distribution, and is more eq

This is great; it's a pretty good feeling to know that people still use Etherpad. jsomers: Do you frequently draft text using Etherpad? Assuming no one else will see your "breadcrumbs", do you find it useful just for yourself?

I couldn't believe this when I read your post, but it turns out there is a minimum employee count requirement, and it's now 500 employees. Just wow. Now, to be fair, the non-enterprise developer program lets you distribute your app to 100 d

I'm now speculating, but I'd guess that a very small percentage of small businesses ever become big businesses, though it's almost surely true that all big businesses were at some point small businesses. Your original argument seems to have

Option grants are taxed as income too, the advantage to options is that any increase in stock price can be taxed as capital gains if you exercise the option immediately and hold the stock for more than 1 year. Direct stock grants are also t

Can you give a more specific link to the bureau of labor statistics? Assuming you're using the typical "500 employees" definition of small business, US census data doesn't seem to bear you out. For the period 1988 to 2003, see table 2c here

If your income comes from capital gains or creative accounting, yes. But if you're a salaried worker earning over 150-200k, the percentage of your income going to federal income tax is greater as your income increases - more of your income

Wait, isn't this almost the opposite of what the article states? I read it as saying that the ruling removed the restriction that SOX Public Company Accounting Oversight Board members could only be removed for good cause. In other words,

I've observed this too, and as an '05, it saddens me somewhat. Much of the top of my class seemed to find the "salesy" aspects of entrepreneurship dirty, and they wanted nothing to do with it.

I'm one of the original etherpad devs. Your project looks pretty cool - if I can help you resolve your memory issues, let me know! Email in profile.
