It's hilarious to say that an orangutan is "self-medicating." You mean it wasn't prescribed by another orangutan with a medical degree?

Along with this, I've taken to making the video chat window very small and putting it at the top edge of my screen underneath my webcam. Reasonably good eye contact and lots of screen space for notes or whatever.

I’m also a layperson and also a fan of the 7-X, almost on purely aesthetic grounds. The plasma shape is a beautiful twisted loop, the magnets resemble a French crueler, and with the shielding and instrumentation it has all the charm of a st

There are a lot of different things to be interested in. At one end visual/graphic design is interesting because, like engineering, it's seeking optimum performance among constraints. Neue Hass Grotesk might technically "outp

When you’re tailing logs on a server there’s still a “logging system“ (your ssh connection, tail -f, a disk with finite space) that can still “fail”. Probably in either case you’d work to fix logging and you’d hope that the system is simple

It seems to me as if all the economic criticisms of grant writing and funding committees (it's rent seeking that can destroy value, it distracts people who actually know science, it makes short term bets, it encourages fashions) could

This post and the above comment prompted me to add alt text for an image on a landing page I’m working on. Whether an image is decorative or not is a complex question that probably hinges on a lot of modernist ideology about the role of orn

One thing that's funny to me about this game is that it the classic "hello world" for the Elm architecture is a button that increments a number[1]. It's not hard to imagine that something like this could've started

Would somebody like to help me understand why KVM switches are so sophisticated? A DisplayPort cable has 20 pins, so why can't it just be a 20 pole switch? (Or 30 pole for two USBs and a headphone jack, etc.)
